GOP blind to its race problem
Miami Herald ^ | 06/21/09 | Leonard Pitts

Posted on 06/23/2009 7:33:32 AM PDT by rwrcpa1

The modern GOP was created in 1965 with a stroke of Lyndon Johnson's pen.

If that is an exaggeration, it is not much of one. When Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act, he made a prediction: In committing the unpardonable sin of guaranteeing the ballot to all citizens regardless of race, he said, he would cause his party to lose the South ``for a generation.''

And indeed Southern Democrats, who for a century had bombed schools, lynched innocents, perverted justice and terrorized millions in the name of intolerance, responded by leaving their ancestral party in droves. They formed the base of a new GOP, a reality acknowledged by Ronald Reagan when he opened his 1980 campaign at a segregationist fair in a town where three civil-rights workers were infamously martyred, by declaring, 'I believe in states' rights.''

In embracing its new southern base, the Republican Party became the Repugnant Party on matters of race, a distinction it has done little to shed.

So some of us were disappointed but not surprised last week when Sherri Goforth, an aide to Tennessee state Sen. Diane Black, came under fire for an e-mail she sent out. It depicted the 44 U.S. presidents, showing the first 43 in dignified, statesmanlike poses. By contrast, the 44th, the first African American, is seen as a pair of cartoon spook eyes against a black backdrop. Goforth's explanation: the e-mail, which went to GOP staffers, was sent ``to the wrong list of people.''

You may wish to let that one marinate for a moment.

And please, don't bother reminding me of Democrat Robert Byrd's onetime membership in the Ku Klux Klan; I make no argument that the Democrats are untainted by bigotry. Rather, my argument is that the GOP is consumed by it, riddled with it...

Oh Leonard has been singing this johnny-one-note song for decades. It was boring then and is boring now. Too bad he can’t remember facts or get anything correct but hey when you are on the “right” side you don’t have to worry about stuff like that

"Race neutrality is now "race problem".

Brave New World.

I am sorry, but in my entire life I have NEVER heard a politician refer to the crrent president as "our beloved president before..."

I must belong to the wrong tribe because -- I can't see it and it sounds positively nauseating!

Doesn’t hate require an active “feeling” towards something or someone? What if I am just indifferent?

I did a Google search for the LBJ money quote I was looking for--it was posted on FR in the past , evidently, by a Freeper named Doctor Raoul:

Ronald Kessler in his book, "Inside The White House" quotes Robert N. MacMillan (a USAF crewman on Air Force One) witnessed LBJ confiding in two governors why he wanted a civil rights bill.

At the bottom of page 33 of paperback: LBJ says, "I'll have them n----rs voting Democratic for the next two hundred years."

Hussein is on the tube again...

When he was elected president he was a world-class ignoramus on economic, foreign, social and ethical issues.
You'd think that finding himself elected, intellectually helpless and hopelessly clueless, he would frantically try to "learn on the job" instead of spouting the Marxist rhetoric that got him this far.

Instead, we get juvenile globe trotting, and an endless stream of "Professor Stepin Corey" skits on TV.

Looks like learning on the job ain't his thing.

“bombed schools, lynched innocents, perverted justice and terrorized millions in the name of intolerance, responded by leaving their ancestral party in droves”

Totally over exaggerated liberal nonsense. Most Southern Democrats were salt of the Earth hardworking christian people. The Democrat Party left them and took a hard turn left on every core issue. Most Southern Democrats opposed the Welfare expansion, federal intervention into what they saw as state issues, affirmative action, feminism, and their hard anti Vietnam stance after Johnson left office. They didn’t go to the party because of an irrational hate for black people. That is nonsense, they went because the party abandoned them on core issues.

For Pitts, this is a new low. This is just one more despicable column by a nitwit who shouldn’t be writing for a small town rag much less a major daily. So the Republican Party is consumed with racism? Notice Pitts selects a few idiots of whom some are not even affiliated with the Republican Party. Because some morons, who may or may not be Republicans, make idiotic remarks, that means the whole party is racist? This is such a stupid conclusion, it shouldn’t even need explaining. Exactly what Republican policies or positions are racist, Mr. Pitts? Name them. Pitts needs to be ridiculed.

"racist rant"

Pitts may or may not be a racist, but he is certainly a RACIALIST. A racialist is a person, usually a lib, who sees and explains everything through the prism of race. That describes Pitts to a t.

"can't ...get anything correct"

In his whole absurd tirade, Pitts failed to name one Pubbie policy or position that's racist. Because there aren't any. Morons like Pitts do more to hold down Black Americans than the most virulent racists extant.

Dear Mr. Leonard Pitts,

Don’t look now but the Democrats continue to enslave blacks and the poor on welfare plantations. Nothing has changed.

At least the libtards try to be a little more subliminal with their racism.

I voted for a conservative black man for President 8 years ago. His name was Alan Keyes. Too bad George W. Bush won the primary.
