Former Crystal Lake High School District 155 board member John Dawson wants to take his politics to a higher level.
Dawson, 52, of Barrington, announced Thursday he's running in the 8th Congressional District's Republican primary. Democratic U.S. Rep. Melissa Bean of Barrington holds the seat Dawson wants.
Other candidates for the GOP or Democratic primaries in the 8th District have not yet stepped forward publicly. The district includes Cook, Lake and McHenry counties.
The owner of a home building and remodeling company, Dawson said the need for job creation and getting a handle on the national deficit are two issues driving him to compete in the Republican primary.
"We need a smaller government," said Dawson, who lives within 8th Congressional District boundaries.

I don’t know anything about this candidate, other than what’s in the article. I hope that whoever the GOP nominates can wage a credible campaign.
How come Kathy Salvi won’t try again ?
This district was formerly represented for many years by Phil Crane, before that by Donald Rumsfeld. Now held, since 2004, by Dem Melissa Bean(bag), who does not even live in the district.
The problem is that the Illinois GOP is a basket case. They could beat her if they got organized.
I don’t know the answer to that. She’s gone back to practicing law. Perhaps she’s happy there, or perhaps the election losses by herself and her husband have left them financially drained.
I agree that someone should be able to defeat Bean. The majority of the state senators, state reps., and county commissioners, in her district, are Republicans
