The 11th District is a tantalizing target for Republicans because of its history of voting for conservatives. The district went strongly for McCain-Palin over Obama-Biden in 2008 while also re-electing Shuler by a wide margin.
The Republican recruiters are meeting with Hendersonville Mayor Greg Newman, former state Sen. Charles Thomas and Henderson County District Attorney Jeff Hunt. All three have expressed an interest in running against Shuler, although Hunt says he is leaning toward running for re-election as the top prosecutor.

I hope they make this work. IMHO, Newsom gets the first crack at challenging Schuler. Shuler’s huge margin last year is more due to a very erratic opponent than his own popularity.

The Democrats hold 257 of the 435 congressional seats. The Republicans must take back 40 seats to regain the majority, and McCarthy believes the party will be competitive in 2010.
"To get 40, you don't pick out 40 seats, you pick out 80," McCarthy said.
I am glad to see that the NRCC is at least trying.
The so-called “blue dogs” need to go because they’re votes for the speakership and even God knows, or maybe I should say, “especially God knows” that Nazi Pelosi needs to go.
This is one of the races I intend to donate to. I was so gleeful participating in the defeat of Tom Daschle (financial donations and GOTV phone calls). There are several ripe districts around the country if the GOP gets their “SH” with their “IT”.
Very good news, thanks for the ping. I was actually resigned to believing that there weren’t any strong challengers in that district, so I’m very glad to see this.
But his voting record says different. He has an ACU rating of only 34%. He was a deciding vote for the passage of Cap & Trade.
Naturally, he is holding no face-to-face town meetings on DeathCare. Bold, eh? He says he is against single payer but expresses his opposition in weasel words and when push comes to shove will vote for the Democrat Plan (is there another one?).
Schuler is nothing more than another Blue Dog poodle whom Nancy Pelosi can count on for a crucial vote. The District needs to vote him out and send him back to Waynesville, or Tennessee, or wherever the heck he is from!
But the GOP needs to be careful which candidate it picks. Some are GOP in name only - like Chuck McGrady from Henderson County, who is a former President of the Sierra Club and a committed Liberal. He would be worse than Schuler!
Newman, Thomas and Hunt sound like promising candidates. But wasn’t there an excellent state senator that had considered making the race in 2008? I think his name is Tom Apodaca, and from what I recall he had a solid conservative voting record.
We could have keep the NC -11 if Charles Taylor decided to just retire in 2004.
We could’ve kept a lot of seats if GOP incumbents cleared out of the way, but many refuse to do it.
Good point. A number of defective incumbents insisted on seeking reelection when their causes had become hopeless.
It’s a spread out district, a lot of people don’t know who the Mayor of Hendersonville is. The district went heavy for Mcain
Or if he showed up to the CAFTA vote
Cough *Phil Crane* cough.
