U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., spent a busy day in Yuma Wednesday, touring both the Yuma Proving Ground and Marine Corps Air Station Yuma before meeting with local press and attending a formal dinner.
He discussed a broad variety of issues, including the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, the economy and his bid to be re-elected to the U.S. Senate in this fall's election.
McCain said, due to developmental issues, the F-35 will be delayed in coming to Yuma.
"It is very much up in the air ... for the fact the cost overruns are unconscionable and unacceptable. You may have noticed Secretary (of Defense) Gates withheld a ($614) million-dollar payment to Lockheed-Martin because they simply haven't produced, and it is a sad thing."
McCain said he understands it is frustrating for the citizens of Yuma.
"I know it's important to Yuma, but over and over and over we have these fantastic cost overruns and delays. We are going to have a hearing in the Armed Services Committee, I think within a month ... so we can (get) a handle on it."
McCain said he will continue to concentrate on improving the economy.
"The economy is in the tank, is terrible and is the worst we have ever seen. People are not staying in their homes, small businesses are going out, so I spend all of my time trying to work on job creation and helping people stay in their homes. It's jobs and jobs and jobs and jobs ..."
McCain said one of the biggest issues was bailing out the big corporations on Wall Street.
"We are paying a very heavy price for it, and I've never known people be as angry as they are today. I'm not a populist, I'm not a socialist, but I think we have to make sure that never again is any institution too big to fail. If they want to go to the casino with their money and we don't guarantee it, then fine, go to the casino. But if you are going to go to the casino, don't have the American taxpayers be responsible for it."
McCain said he has an idea that may help prevent such bailouts in the future.
"Banks that engage in traditional banking behavior, making loans, etc.; guarantee them the FDIC. If they are (dealing in) hedge funds and they engage in all the speculation, fine, don't guarantee them. Let's separate the two. But don't underestimate the influence of these lobbyists ... it's huge."
McCain said the focus also needs to be shifted onto small businesses.
"The other thing, figure out what small business needs. They need tax cuts, they need lines of credit, they need tax credits for depreciation write-offs for investment."
McCain said he is ready for the battles of election season.
"Right after I lost (the presidential election) in November a year ago ... I knew the best thing to do was to get back to work, and I really went back to work. I realized I had to work hard and not take anything for granted. I have known incumbents who have believed out of ... gratitude, people would return them to office, which in this situation is a mistake."
McCain said he is taking the election very seriously.
"(The voters) want to know what you are going to do for them, and I have to earn every vote. I'm confident I can win this race. I'm confident I can show the people of Arizona I am effective for them in Washington. For me not to go all out between now and Aug. 24 (primary election) would be foolish."
"Let's not call it a bailout. Let's call it a rescue."
U.S. SEN. JOHN MCCAIN, 2008-09-30
No, he’s right. He’s not a socialist. Socialists with a pair call themselves so. Juan is a RINO and such NWO scum say anything to appease the opposition and the sheeple.
“I’m not a socialist”...
you’re not a conservative, either.
If you are a Republican and you have to declare you are not a socialist you have one big problem!
McCain talks like he hasn’t been part of the Washington establishment for over twenty years. He should just gracefully retire. Does his ego need all that media stroking that badly?
How about customers! I don't think McStain will ever get it.
Go JD!
He's a Reid/Polousie waterboy.
Notice how he is all over the tube lately? Even more than usual.
We can not allow the media to once again choose the candidate.

“If they want to go to the casino with their money and we don’t guarantee it, then fine, go to the casino. But if you are going to go to the casino, don’t have the American taxpayers be responsible for it.”
McCain, the comedian. How about your gambling at Indian Casinos with the lobbyists who bribed you and wasted uncountable tax dollars doing it???? Hmmm??? How about the special favors you gave those lobbyists by being in charge of Indian Affairs in the Senate? Hmmm???
