Washington State Senator Don Benton dropped his bid for Senate in Washington Thursday, endorsing Dino Rossi as the Republican candidate best positioned to defeat Sen. Patty Murray.
Benton, a 16-year legislator who used warm language to welcome Rossi to the race last week, said defeating Patty Murray would be extremely difficult following a closely contested Republican primary between "several well-qualified candidates."
"Patty Murray has six million special interest dollars in the bank. To defeat her, we must consolidate our resources, and work together to put our country back on the right track. Therefore, since this campaign has never been about me, I have decided to do what is best for my country, my party, and my fellow Washingtonians: I am stepping aside to endorse Dino Rossi," Benton said.

Benton, a great American.
Very true.
Here’s a new development.
Good to hear. I hope that Washington State Republicans remember Senator Benton’s selfless act the next time he runs for office.
I have noticed a trend where Republicans are dropping out of the race and endorsing other republicans in order to consolidate the base and save money to fight the dems. I think it is an honorable trait and I hope to see more selfless service!
I don’t know Benton either - but VERY classy. And there will be a LOT more races for him to run in. But in 2010, the Senate is by far the most critical.
Patty Murray is dumber than a bag full of hammers. Somebody take her out of elective office!
Smart move.

“Benton gives way to Rossi (drops out of race)”
Never heard of Benton.
You should get away from the computer more often. Don Benton is an old guard Republican and former state GOP chairman. Where’s your cave? Benton is from the Vancouver area in Clark County down by Portland.
I have family living in that area, I should ask them.
He’s very popular down in Clark County. They’ve even re-elected him consistently after his bone headed actions back in 1999-2000 when he was the WSRP Chair.
I live in Benton’s area in Clark County. He seems like a decent guy and conservative too. I have emailed him several times and always got a personal response. I most likely would rather have him instead of Dino in that senate seat, but Dino has the name recognition, and Don does not. Classy guy I will keep voting for if given the chance.
More big news- Sean Salazar has dropped out of the race and endorsed Dino Rossi.
