A retired television sportscaster has won the Republican primary over a former U.S. Army paratrooper in North Carolina's 8th Congressional District.
Harold Johnson will take on first-term Democratic Rep. Larry Kissell in November.
Johnson defeated Tim D'Annunzio in Tuesday's runoff in district covering several south-central counties. With most precincts reporting, Johnson received 63 percent of the vote compared to 37 percent for D'Annunzio.
D'Annunzio received the most votes in the May 4 primary but failed to reach the more than 40 percent needed to avoid a runoff. State GOP leaders later distanced themselves from D'Annunzio because of revelations about his personal life.
Johnson worked at WSOC-TV before retiring in 2006.

I’m relieved by this result, as Tim D’Annunzio appears to be a flake.
A flake with a lot of money. He’ll probably badmouth Johnson to keep him from taking back this seat for us, too.
Thank goodness. If that nutcase had won not only would have guaranteed a rat win but possibly also hurt other Republicans running in NC.
37% of the voters didn’t get the memo?
“You aren’t the announcer on those Johnson commercials”
“No”.
LOL
Is Johnson such an “idiot” as they all say? One tool said he’s voting for Kissell. Now that’s idiotic.
I don’t know that he’s an idiot, but he’s gotten by on his name, positivity and platitudes. Keep in mind that the host of that show is a huge cynic and is anti- all politicians, and gets like-minded, cranky folks calling in.
