Fincher Beats Flinn (TN)

Gospel performer Steve Fincher has won northwest Tennessee's 8th District Republican primary.

With 68 percent of precincts reporting, Fincher had 30,228 votes, or 50 percent of the vote, to Jackson physician Ron Kirkland's 14,873, or 25 percent. Memphis radiologist and broadcaster George Flinn had 13,431 votes, or 22 percent.

The three waged the most expensive House race in the country, spending more than $5 million.

Fincher, also a farmer, faces Democratic state Sen. Roy Herron in fall. Incubent Democratic Rep. John Tanner is retiring, and Republicans think the seat is one they could pick up in November.

Fincher won by an impressive margin, but he got banged up in the process. This was one of the nastiest Republican primaries in the country.

Some of Flinn's radio stations broadcast unadulterated hip-hop, rap and punk garbage. Not really much help for Dr. Flinn

District 6 is still too close to call.

This was the candidate the party preferred at the start. Herron will still be a difficult opponent.

Yes, I caught that late last night. Of the three TN districts, isn’t this the likeliest one for a GOP pick up?

No, the 6th is the lock.

This one is more a tossup.

The Lincoln Davis seat I guess is lean rat. DJ?

Davis should be a top target, but he drew only lesser candidates. I don’t know what’s going on there. Scott DesJarlais apparently won the nomination but there hasn’t been any coverage of it. Some FReeper Conservatives in that district went for the 3rd place finisher, whom I endorsed, Kent Greenough, thinking DesJarlais was in over his head with this contest. Even if Davis survives, the district he is in is absurdly drawn (Davis drew it for himself when he was still in the legislature), and we’ll likely chop it up for 2012 (since Diane Black won the 6th nod, we can extend the redrawn 6th to take in Davis’s Fentress County home which is not far from the current CD boundary).
