The two attorneys produced a vitriolic race filled with negative campaign commercials, personal smears and scathing mailers.

“My supporters are fired up and we are ready to get back to work, as soon as tomorrow morning,” Landry said. “Our message resonated with voters. They want to send someone to Washington who can create good sustaining jobs.”

He'll face Sangisetty, the unchallenged Democrat who has $247,000 in the bank, based on figures from the Federal Election Commission. Landry has $211,000.

Downer said he'll “stay involved in and informed about” the race but stopped short of issuing any kind of endorsement.

I think that Hunt Downer has ended his career on a shameful note. He should have known he had no chance of winning the runoff, but pursued it anyway and refused to endorse the winner, who was supported by the local TEA Parties.

Then, Downer is an appropriate name for this person.

He should have run for the seat when Tauzin stepped down in 04. Could have even used that as a springboard to challenge Landrieu in 08. Instead, we had a bloody open primary fight between Tauzin’s kid and a GOP state senator that ended up letting Melancon squeak by when he ran against the younger Tauzin in the runoff.

Oh well. The seat’s going GOP again and Melancon’s getting thrashed by Vitter. Not a loss if Downer was going to be this petulant.
