As Democrats nationwide shun campaign help from the White House, Senate candidate Alexi Giannoulias plans to buck the trend and stand boldly with President Obama during a presidential stop this week in Illinois.
Despite the president's waning popularity, Mr. Giannoulias has hitched his campaign to Mr. Obama, running television advertisements touting his close relationship with the former senator from the Land of Lincoln.
Such a move would be politically risky in many states where "tea party" fervor and anti-Obama sentiment runs high. But the president still holds some cachet in his home state, which Mr. Giannoulias hopes will help push him ahead in a surprisingly close race with Republican Rep. Mark Steven Kirk.
"Giannoulias is hanging around because it's a Democratic state and the president is still more popular in Illinois than anywhere else, and because Kirk just shot himself in the foot," said Kent Redfield, a political science professor at the University of Illinois at Springfield, referring to the heat taken by Mr. Kirk for previously overstating his military record.
Mr. Giannoulias' campaign has been plagued by missteps, questions about his leadership as state treasurer and lingering concerns about his role in a failed family business.
Yet most pollsters and political experts, while giving a slight edge to Mr. Kirk, say the race is too close to call...

The Libertarian in the race is really the best candidate to vote for but the Constitution candidate is trying to get on the ballot as well, so those votes will be split as well. But yes, I would rather have Alexi win the seat than Kirk.
So you would prefer to be represented by a full-time rubber stamp for BO rather than by someone who agrees with you 50-60 percent of the time. Short-sighted and pathetic.
Hard line conservatives need to learn that we accomplish nothing without a majority, and that includes moderates in a big-tent party.
If the health care fight proved anything, it is that any RINO is better than any RAT. Not one GOP defection, a credit to Mitch McConnell.
Mark Kirk isn't even 20%. He's a full-blown socialist. So yes, I would rather have the Democrat win.
Look, it doesn't matter because Republicans will still be shy of 60 seats in the Senate anyway even if all Democrat Senate incumbents lose. So why pad the Senate with more RINOs?

Moderates like Specter, Murkowski, Castle who have stabbed us in the back? How does supporting a pro-partial birth abortion, pro-cap and trade, pro-illegal alien, and pro-gun control Republican like Kirk help us?

Will Mark Kirk fight to repeal Obamacare or "work to make it better?"
Rep. Kirk is my congressman, so I know that he’s more liberal than many Democrats. I’ll probably vote for Mike Labno, a Libertarian.
Kirk voted against the health care law, but he said that he opposes repealing the law.
Yes, but the day after the health care vote, Kirk was all fire and brimstone about repealing it. But, the next day, he licked his finger and stuck it in the wind, and decided to moderate his position to sitting on the sidelines. I think Kirk is done. The IL conservatives are going to close the door of the big tent on Mark Kirk. You’ve gotta draw the line somewhere.
