A recent independent poll conducted by Merriman River Group has State Sen. Sam Caligiuri (R-16) ahead of incumbent Democratic Congressman Chris Murphy (CT-5) by 5.4 points, with Caligiuri polling at 49.7 percent and Murphy at 44.3 percent.
The poll, commissioned by CT Capitol Report, a Connecticut political blog, surveyed 481 likely voters in the 5th District, with a predicted margin of error of 4.4 percent. Of those surveyed, 6 percent were undecided.
"Chris Murphy appears to be facing an uphill fight to keep his seat," Merriman Group Executive Director Matthew Fitch said in their report. "He is behind opponent Sam Caligiuri just outside the margin of error, with Caligiuri pushing the 50 percent threshold in our survey."
"We still have a long way to go, but these poll results are very encouraging and echo what I've been hearing from people throughout the District," Caligiuri said, ascribing the tight race to Murphy's position on economic issues and voters' disappointment in the Democratic Congress.
"Voters are angry with Murphy's lockstep support for Nancy Pelosi's agenda," Caligiuri contended. "The Murphy-Pelosi Congress has made it harder for businesses to create jobs and for people to keep or gain them."
The next day, the Murphy campaign released internal polling numbers that have their candidate 14 points ahead.

In addition to this, in the adjoining 4th. District, Dan Debicella has pulled almost even with Obama Democrat Jim Himes. It looks promising.
Go Sam and Dan!
Over here FYI.
Let’s hope the wave keeps building and comes down in a great crescendo come November with the dimoKKKRATS getting crushed.
glad the hoosiers are monitoring the CT suburbs. I am in CT-5. As for Murphy losing, he ain’t goin’ down without a fight. I am too busy working a legislative seat to watch.
We're in district #1 (John Larson, yuck), but we live near Simsbury and Tariffville.
For what it's worth... there are LOTS of Chris Murphy and local 'RAT pol signs in parts of those areas. We need everyone to get out the vote for Sam Caligiuri. This poll is encouraging, though...
In CT-5 there are a LOT of Caligiuri and Linda yard signs and bumper stickers.
Chris Murphy is a Democrat hack....a lapdog for Pelosi. Sam Caligiuri is a solid Republican with excellent leadership qualities that will serve the Fifth district well, unlike Murphy, who is hoping to slide into another term on the basis of a Democrat voter registration advantage in the district. Not this time. Voters are fed up with Washington politicians and ‘business as usual’. The failed and harmful policies of the Obama administration are hurting Fifth district residents and Chris Murphy is part of the problem. He will lose and be replaced by State Senator Sam Caligiuri, a change that will be good for the people of the district and the state. Chris Murphy has done little and definitely won’t be missed.
Nice. What bout Joe Courtney in the 2nd? His seat is more rat than the other 2. I haven’t read a thing about Janet Peckinpaugh (R).
COurtney is up by 14
Thanks. That’s too bad.
