Delegates at today's Republican Party State Central Committee approved a 2-year party ban on 18 high profile Republicans who supported Independence Party candidate Tom Horner. The list includes former GOP governors Al Quie and Arne Carlson and former US Senator Dave Durenberger.
On a 59 to 55 vote, the motion would forbid them from being Republican delegates or attending the Republican National Convention in 2012. Supporters of the motion say it would hold people accountable for calling themselves Republicans yet supporting a rival candidate.
Delegate Jim Newberger of Becker says Democrat Mark Dayton may not be leading the recount if the endorsements for Horner didn't occur.
"These people, their money and their influence, possibly cost us 8,000 votes," Newberger said. "These are some big names. But it's time for the Republican Party to grow a spine. Either you're a Republican or you're not."
But other delegates said the motion would make the party look vindictive. Jen De Journett of Maple Grove, says the proposal would make the party look bad.
"Even if we pass this motion, we can't exactly take away a former governor's title," she said. "We can't vote people out who may or may not live in this state and we're going to look like a bunch of goofballs."

This isn't a case of trying to run the RINO's out of the party. It's actually simpler than that. It's called party loyalty - something that hasn't always been stressed as much as it should have.
Truth be told, the action taken by the state GOP's Central Committee will have little or no effect on the individuals shown in the article. But nonetheless, it's overdue.

I thought the dems were the only ones who called other dems accountable? this is good....
Why is that considered “punishment”? They turned their back on the party this fall. Obviously they don’t care that much about it.
I’m not the most political of observers, but being a traitor is being a traitor in 99.7% of instances. If these folks campaigned as or represented themselves to be Repubs, then switched their votes elsewhere, that IMO is intolerable behavior. If they didn’t like the selected nominee (about whom I know nothing) then they should have resigned.
I can’t support “treason” to a cause one takes up voluntarily; and I can’t support “bait and switch”.
It depends on who the Republican candidate was. If it was a blue blood RINO, punishing those who didn’t support him/her would cause more harm than good, IMO.
I don’t get to go the the National convention either. I don’t consider it punishment. I don’t know why these elites get a free trip anyway.
No, just the opposite. He was an excellent conservative. The offenders are all RINOS.

I am in complete agreement with the state GOP leadership.
I worked on several campaigns in Maine. In one case, the outgoing Republican District Attorney endorsed his chief deputy of 20 years for the position. I can understand loyalty and am not overly concerned when something like this happens. Loyalty is important to me.
However, this outgoin DA was also running for the state house as a Republican,during his campaigning and door knocking he was also passing out literature for the Deputy and campaigned against the Republican endorsed candidate.
The Republican, my guy lost by a few hundred votes.
This “Republican” DA should be expelled from the party or least never endorsed for any office, never permitted to attend a convention and so forth.
The GOP candidate (Tom Emmer) was a staunch Republican.
The people who backed former Republican Tom Horner were primarily moderate Republicans and many of them hadn’t held public office in at least 10 to 20 years.
I would like to see the Alaska Party take the same stand against those who came out in support of murkowski. Not going to hold my breath however. I’m afraid the republicrat coalition is here to stay now. To quote Reagan, they left me, I didn’t leave them

In those cases you are exactly right, What is happening here in Minnesota this year is the exact opposite, and should be encouraged.
My god, ALbert Quie is still alive? My dearly departed wife bought a thoroughbred quarterhorse from him in 1968 (Poco Carrie to be specific).

You would think that endorsing Obama against RINO McCain would be the last act one could perform as an apparent Republican. But the piece of filth is still the go-to guy for the local media on all things Repubulican; where he never misses a chance to damage the party and conservatism in general. You could travel the world over for centuries on end, and never find a better example of depravity.
Why not ban Arne for life, seeing how he endorsed 0bama in ‘08 in addition to this? That jerk needs a public whuppin’.
More seriously, this is a good idea, if only to get the word out that Carlson, Quie and Durenberger don’t speak for the party.
OTOH, are there any exit polls showing that Horner took more votes from Emmer than from Dayton? It seemed as if Horner’s campaign was targeted more at independents and at Dems who may have been embarrassed by Dayton than at pubbies.

I am in total agreement with the action taken, and am only mystified why it was a close vote. Being a party leader has to mean something, and here in WV we have definite rules just like the one voted on.
