Our misplaced obsession with Sarah Palin: Calm down, she’s a celebrity, not a future president
The Christian Science Monitor ^ | February 3, 2011 | Walter Rodgers

Sarah Palin is like a good movie that you don’t want to end. To tea party supporters and millions of Republicans, she epitomizes Frank Capra’s drama “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington” – in which the Washington elite shun the hero, whose straight talk and rogue style win the hearts of ordinary Americans. To others, she calls to mind the 1963 comedy “It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World” – in which a pack of comedians pursue an elusive treasure that makes fools of them all.

Not presidential material

The mere mention of her name can trigger hysteria in polite company. Perhaps now is a good time for supporters and detractors alike to calm down and rethink Ms. Palin. She has been unfairly maligned at times, but so was Hillary Rodham Clinton. Politics is as brutal as professional boxing. If you get in the ring, you have to learn to take a hard punch, and lots of them. Palin is certainly a resilient political figure, and a genius for promoting her brand, but she isn’t presidential material – and the GOP knows it. Her staying power is that she has risen above the stature of mere conservative politician, subject to the rules of the game. Rather she’s become a true entertainer who happens to be wildly popular among some conservative voters.

Part of Palin’s success lies in her uncanny ability to always look good on camera. Her natural beauty and charm help, but only someone with her magnetic confidence could pose with a half-dozen men clad in fur vests and Viking helmets and still have a thriving public career. Former Democratic presidential candidate Michael Dukakis can attest to how quickly bad photographs can ruin a candidate’s presidential hopes. Remember Mr. Dukakis in 1988 grinning atop a tank while wearing a helmet....

I agree with you. As soon as I hear or read someone say that Obama is presidential and Palin isn’t. That negates the rest of what they are saying.

Just because they say it, doesn’t make it true.

Hey, I don’t blame you.

It’s hard to think for yourself, and it’s so much easier to let the mainstream media just tell you what to think!

Those crazy people who think she is like Reagan probably read her books and know about her true experience and history, and other boring stuff like that...those idiots!

I’m with you - - hey, did you watch American Idol last night? Wow so exciting!!!!!!

We have suffered thru one really bad decision for President in Obama I would hate to see it again with Palin.

I suggest that you read her first book. If you read it with an open mind, you will see that Sarah is a true conservative who has 18 years of executive experience.

She reveres our beloved Constitution. She will make an excellent President.

Be honest. Michael Reagan backed off that and declared Palin too polarizing. I have seen him in an interview recently. It seems he has no fire inside anymore. Maybe his wife is jealous, with the result that he changed his tune -- lol.

Hmmm. Didn’t Obama’s followers, along with the slobbering media promote him like some sort of rock star? And who is President, right now?

There is a reason Sarah Palin is attacked 100 different ways every week by snarky little leftists and some 'conservative' elitists...

Yes, it's because the Powers That Be don't own her, like they do most of the politicians in the country. She's not subject to their control and is willing to go against their interests.

I fear for her safety.

I was around for Reagan and Palin is Reagan in High Heels! She is better looking, but Reagan was not in his prime.

Palin is quicker in getting her words out than any politician in the last 50 years, this is a sign she says what she believes! Finally, someone who tells the Truth!

Some people seems to think a woman can’t run this country, that’s another reason why she needs to be the first woman President!

She would do a lot to hurt the men having sex with men lifestyle, Normal would be back in again! That’s probably the biggest reason that the anti Palin freepers keeping spurring out all the same negatives Reagan lived with, yes, our token liberal democrat Trolls and with their sick lifestyle!

“It’s hard to think for yourself, and it’s so much easier to let the mainstream media just tell you what to think!”

Well if thats how you want to get your information more power to you. I will continue to think for myself. I hope you get better tho.

“Those crazy people who think she is like Reagan probably read her books and know about her true experience and history, and other boring stuff like that...those idiots”

Yea writing a book and saying you love the constitution is a really good reason to be President. LOL!

“I’m with you - - hey, did you watch American Idol last night? Wow so exciting!!!!!!”

Nope but it explains your post, thanks now I know where your mind is at.

Loving the constitution and writing a book does not qualify one for the job of President. Quitting your job early doesn’t and a short time in politics doesn’t.

So far she comes across about as qualified as Obama and that has turned out real bad. I am thinking of the future of your country and I hate this current President enough to not want another flash in the pan.

” was around for Reagan and Palin is Reagan in High Heels!”

I was too and she is not.

“Palin is quicker in getting her words out than any politician in the last 50 years, this is a sign she says what she believes! Finally, someone who tells the Truth!”

Wait until she actually has to face the press and deal with it. She isn’t doing that and for good reason. She couldn’t handle them and got ate alive by the press. If she can’t handle the press and getting her message out that way then she’s not really that good. She does it via tweets and books because of her inability to deal with the press.

“Some people seems to think a woman can’t run this country, that’s another reason why she needs to be the first woman President!”

Well I don’t see it having anything to do with gender, race, religion or looks.

“She would do a lot to hurt the men having sex with men lifestyle, Normal would be back in again! That’s probably the biggest reason that the anti Palin freepers keeping spurring out all the same negatives Reagan lived with, yes, our token liberal democrat Trolls and with their sick lifestyle!”

I just don’t see the conspiracy. I am not saying it’s not there and I am not subscribing to what all these people are saying. I am speaking from what I have seen. I like her and I think she has done a great job of working with a new movement and getting into it early. I think she would be much better at making kings than being king. I also don’t see that as bad I think it’s a much stronger position than actually holding the seat.

There are no real similarities between them. No need to look further I have looked enough. She is not him nor anywhere close.

Well, that's unfortunate that you don't see the obvious similarities, but to each his own.

I guess you'll see it when you see it.

Reagan had to go around the press, and speak directly to the American people for his message to be heard unadulterated. If the social networking tools had been available during his time, I guarantee you he would have made use of them, just as Sarah is doing now.

Palin has more balls than any one out there, and has been the head of the movement for 2 and half years!

She the the biggest base supporting her and the people who give money and will work for her are by far the biggest and will not help anyone else!

Palin’s family is more normal than Reagan's!

Palin’s supreme court picks will be better than Reagan's!

Reagan did fine with the press he handled them well. You really can’t guarantee much in the way of Reagan. He got his message across just fine. She is no Reagan she is nowhere close. I like her but I see no point in giving her more credit than she deserves.
