Health-care jabs bloody up Mitt Romney
The Boston Herald ^ | February 26, 2011 | Hillary Chabot

Posted on 02/25/2011 11:02:46 PM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

Former Gov. Mitt Romney came under new fire from all sides yesterday over his landmark Bay State health-care overhaul as potential 2012 Republican rivals and local Democrats took turns blasting the GOP presidential front-runner.

“I’ve talked to residents of Massachusetts, and what I’ve gotten is that (health-care reform is) really not working well at all,” said former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson, who is believed to be considering a 2012 bid.

Johnson declined to comment on whether health care will hurt Romney’s candidacy, saying, “whatever the criticism is about a candidate, everyone already knows it. I don’t (have to) say it because it’s out there.”

But Sarah Palin spokeswoman Rebecca Mansour didn’t shy away from the hot-button issue, re-tweeting “Romney spokesman: He’s darned proud of RomneyCare.”

The new barrage comes on the heels of harsh words from former 2008 presidential rival Mike Huckabee, who told reporters this week that Romney should apologize for health-care reform.

“He’s got to figure out how he wants to deal with it. It’s the 800-pound elephant in the room for him,” Huckabee said.

The former Arkansas governor devotes an entire chapter in his new book, “A Simple Government,” to trashing the plan, which requires all Bay State residents to get health insurance and offers state-subsidized insurance plans for those who may not be able to otherwise afford it.

“It could be argued that if RomneyCare were a patient, the prognosis would be dismal,” he writes. “If our goal in health-care reform is better care at lower cost, then we should take a lesson from RomneyCare, which shows that socialized medicine does not work.”

Romney has worked to distance himself from his health-care plan — the first of its kind in the nation — but President Obama himself has acknowledged he used the proposal as a template for his own controversial national health-care plan.

Romney aide Eric Fehrnstrom responded to the new salvos with a statement saying Romney is “proud” that so many are insured in the Bay State.

But Massachusetts Democratic Party Chairman John Walsh turned that innocuous statement on Romney, declaring yesterday he’s “proud of Mitt.”

“Today, we now see that, for the time being at least, flip-flopping on his views of our great health-care reform will not join his other Olympic-level flip-flops,” Walsh said in a statement.

Andrew E. Smith, a political professor at the University of New Hampshire, said the early attacks on Romney are par for the course, given his front-runner status.

“It’s not surprising that they are going after him in that sense — anyone who’s the front-runner is likely to get the most shots,” Smith said.

But Smith said Romney could turn the criticism to his advantage if he meets it head-on now.

Said Smith: “The longer he goes without dealing with it, the harder it’s going to be for him to shake it.”

I can’t believe he’s running. I think there are a lot of people who just... well... they are not up to speed the virtual insolvency of the Federal government.

The Huckabee and Romney supporters... someone just has to keep getting news out to them, that these are business as usual guys, and that has a significant chance of being a disaster and the blame will fall on Repubs.

Same old people, retreads, are not going to cut it, because we will be in such a bad situation by 2012. It may get bad enough that people will flat out reject them in the primary.

We need to calmly explain that business as usual is much, much worse than a fresh face. Experience at “washington” is becoming a huge drawback for Congress critters and President critters.

I certainly hope so.

The last thing we need right now is another tired old RINO leading us further into socialism.

If ever we needed new blood and fresh ideas, it's now.

Yep...I'm fine, thanks.

It's quiet so far today. Maybe they got all their "rage" out yesterday. (I doubt it...)

Romney is DOA.

Everybody realizes this except the Establishment morons in the GOP.

The second ObamaCare passed, Romney political viability died.

No, I wasn't that close to all of the activity. It was centered around Tahrir Square (not to be confused with the square of the same name in Cairo - and most "squares" in Baghdad are actually circles...LOL) downtown and by the Parliament building.

We were on alert in case anybody got inspired to launch any little presents onto the base, but that didn't materialize.

We still get the occasional "love letter" from those folks outside the wire.

“Romney will be your new slavemaster. Or 0bama. Same difference.”

For Romney, RomneyCare takes away Romney’s only plus which he is business friendly.

A gentleman named Tony Robbins once said something that to this day I find profound. “When you have one extreme, the only way to come back to the middle is doing something that is the opposite extreme.”

Romney doesn’t fit that bill. Now Palin, Bachman, DeMint do. I like Christie but he doesn’t fit the Robbins paradigm.

I can't believe it either. Romney's like a dinosaur who won't accept that the meteor struck despite the entire planet burning around him.

The pressure needs to be tripled on him to step down and put himself out of our political misery sooner than later. We can't waste any time on "has-been socialists".
