Dessert? Christie and Huckabee Support First Lady
The New York Times ^ | February 27, 2011 | Richard Pérez-Peña

In the dessert wars, at least, Chris Christie and Mike Huckabee side with Michelle Obama, not Sarah Palin.

Some conservatives, notably Ms. Palin, have mocked Mrs. Obama’s campaign against obesity, particularly in children. But on separate Sunday morning news programs, Mr. Christie, the New Jersey governor, and Mr. Huckabee, the former Arkansas governor — both Republicans — defended Mrs. Obama, and Mr. Christie put his answer in personal terms.

“I think it’s a really good goal to encourage kids to eat better,” Mr. Christie said on “Face the Nation,” on CBS. “You know, I’ve struggled with my weight for 30 years, and it’s a struggle. And if a kid can avoid that in his adult years or her adult years, more power to them, and I think the first lady’s speaking out well.”

Mrs. Obama has urged parents and food manufacturers to make healthier choices available to children, adding that she tells her daughters, “Dessert is not a right.” She has not called for government mandates on the issue.

Even so, Ms. Palin, the former Alaska governor and 2008 Republican vice-presidential candidate, has called Mrs. Obama’s efforts an example of “government thinking that they need to take over and make decisions for us.” In a December episode of “Sarah Palin’s Alaska,” on TLC, Ms. Palin searched her kitchen for the ingredients to make s’mores, saying it was “in honor of Michelle Obama, who said the other day we should not have dessert.”(continued)

"I’ve struggled with my weight for 30 years,"

Christie's weight is the least of his problems.

Not that I don’t think public schools should atleast get out of the business of selling bad food to kids...why are two fat or recently fat guys telling me how to live my healthy life? I mean if you have a track star telling me something, maybe I’ll listen.

I’ll even go along with Moochelle making nutrition “her issue” and all that...it’s for the children ya know, like Laura Bush’s literacy program. If she wants the schools to serve healthy food, that’s fine too in my view, because that’s public money. Just like it’s fine for Sheriff Joe to serve baloney sandwiches to his prisoners. But schools are run by local school boards, so she can *ask* but not tell.

But get the hell off the backs of adults and the food industry. It’s still (barely) a free country and nobody cares what she thinks.

If only Michelle Obama was was in charge of their eating habits as children, Christie and Huck would be slender today.

Oddly enough, the only person who disses Michelle is the one who is in the very best shape.

Christie is either a complete moron for not recognizing this is another issue of government takeover, or he’s a snake.

As for Huckabee, he’s not a moron. Just very good at hiding his fangs.

Oh well, if it’s for the children...

now wait a minute,
that’s the oldest play in the book; and they’re falling
for it?

This is the worst kind of a lie.

I wish they would just come out and tell us they think we’re to stupid to manage our own affairs.

It’s really a very basic point about the limits we place on government. Gov. Palin believes that what you eat is your business, parents informing their children. Christie and Huck and Michelle O believe that government knows best and needs to limit your choices because too much freedom is not good for you. Michelle’s program isn’t limited to providing nutrition instruction but also changes what foods are available using regulation and intimidation. If these Republicans don’t believe in individual freedom, what do they believe in?

Nobody, including Ms. Palin, is disputing that chronic overeating (especially ‘junk’ food) is unhealthy.

But who’s job is it to set things right with kids?

It’s not the Nanny State - it’s personal responsibility. And paraphrasing what Mrs. Bob Dole once said, it doesn’t take a village to bring your kids up, it takes a family, i.e., caring and engaged PARENTS.

How twisted most of our politicans have become.

Two fat guys want to stick up for Madame LaFarge Obama because if they do maybe their extra pounds will disappear magically. Who knows, but Palin versus these three on this topic is a wipeout. Palin by a KO!

They both have weight issues and are sympathetic to the idea that government should have some role to play in encouraging us to eat healthy and exercise.

This is the problem with these guys. While they are conservative on some issues, and Christie in particular is fantastic taking on the public employee unions, neither of them fundamentally stand for the idea that government should simply mind it’s own business and do ONLY that which can not be done by the private sector. Both believe in somewhat smaller government, but are still essentially statists in many ways and believe government should have a prominent role in our lives.

Huckabee I never cared for, Christie I do like quite a lot - but neither are ideologically particularly suited to be major standard bearers for movement conservatives.

Again the media is trying to create a rift in the conservative movement that doesn't exist. I don't know of anyone on our side that wouldn't agree it's laudable to encourage kids to eat healthier or for public schools to provide healther options. But it's quite another thing to have it be mandated by the government. I'm sure if Chris Christie was asked about the federal government mandating kids eat certain foods he would not be in support. Huckabee probably wouldn't be either.

Sarah has the right idea. The Great Moo's gov dietary regulations should be celebrated with a quart of rich cookie n cream Blue Bell.

The fat kid down the street is the parents business, none of my business.

Why does Government expend time, and our money minding the fat kid down the streets parents business?

Because they are elitist collectivists that want the subjugates healthy, and productive for the benefit of the collective.

The Leftists were treating us as a collective long before the Obamassault that has us almost a collective today.
