So, it appears that the president has decided to channel the candidacy of Walter Mondale from 1984. Heres President Obama, on Monday:
So this is how we can reduce spending: by scouring the budget for every dime of waste and inefficiency, by reforming government spending, and by making modest adjustments to Medicare and Medicaid. But all these reductions in spending, by themselves, will not solve our fiscal problems. We cant just cut our way out of this hole. Its going to take a balanced approach. If were going to make spending cuts -- many of which we wouldnt make if we werent facing such large budget deficits -- then its only right that we ask everyone to pay their fair share
And thats why this plan eliminates tax loopholes that primarily go to the wealthiest taxpayers and biggest corporations - tax breaks that small businesses and middle-class families dont get. And if tax reform doesn't get done, this plan asks the wealthiest Americans to go back to paying the same rates that they paid during the 1990s, before the Bush tax cuts.
Heres Walter Mondale, more than a quarter century ago:
Whoever is inaugurated in January, the American people will have to pay Mr. Reagan's bills. The budget will be squeezed. Taxes will go up. And anyone who says they won't is not telling the truth to the American people.
I mean business. By the end of my first term, I will reduce the Reagan budget deficit by two-thirds.
Let's tell the truth. It must be done, it must be done. Mr. Reagan will raise taxes, and so will I. He won't tell you. I just did.....

AnyBody Else 2012
Walter was on the radio in Mn last week. I did not recognize his voice, it was so old.
And then his daughter died. God forbid but I don’t think he’ll make it to the new year.
I disagree with him about everything but he’s a good man.
God save us from good men.
And the writer made a point I’ve been making as well: Carter, Clinton and Obama ran as moderates (they are liberals but ran for the Presidency as reformers of govt...etc) and they won. An upfront liberal hasn’t won since 1964 and won’t win in 2012 and that’s exactly what O is running (with his liberal record he cant escape) and talking about raising taxes
How can the media possible print a quote like this with a straight face and clear conscience?
It’s good to remember his daughter, who was well respected in Chicago media circles, and who fought the good fight. That’s tough on any parent. Elanor, we think you’re swell...RIP.
“So this is how we can reduce spending: by scouring the budget for every dime of waste and inefficiency, ...”
Those $16 muffins sure aren’t helping.
They tried to pair Elanor with Jesse Ventura in the Twin Cities talk market for a few weeks. Didn’t work out too well. No chemistry. Fascinating experiment though.
Mondale is too old. They need to run someone younger: John Edwards, Patrick Kennedy, Anthony Weiner, Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Dennis Kucinich....Lots of younger talent to choose from.
