Three Things Rick Perry Can Learn From Sarah Palin
Time ^ | October 18, 2011 | Jay Newton-Small

Rick Perry’s awkward courtship of the Republican party reminds me a lot of the jig Sarah Palin performed right after the 2008 campaign. Unsure of whether to go the establishment route, Palin made overtures inside the Beltway before finally breaking with them and going with Tea Party. So, I thought it might be instructive to look back at some of the lessons Rick Perry can take from Palin’s base whispering.

1) Man up. Perry shouldn’t apologize for his shortcomings in debates or speeches. And his wife shouldn’t cry at a public speech about how brutalized he’s been by his rivals – can you imagine Todd doing that? It’s only been six weeks. This will only get worse next year if he’s the nominee. Palin proved you could whine about the national press all you like, but you can’t complain about your rivals or wallow in self-pity over your own performance. When she did — she once used the term “blood libel” — she got savaged. The same is true for Perry.

2) Energy policy isn’t a complete platform on its own. Just about the only national issue Palin was comfortable talking about in 2008 and 2009 was domestic energy. Rick Perry is sounding just like her with his recent announcement of a jobs plan that focused almost exclusively on that topic. Energy may be important to Alaska and Texas, but in early primary states like Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina, it is no where near the top issue for voters. Palin diversified – health reform, Libya, all those op-eds in the Wall Street Journal on the economy....

“Energy may be important to Alaska and Texas, but in early primary states like Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina, it is no where near the top issue for voters.”

It SHOULD be. Beyond the implications of energy independence and national security, there’s the cost of heating an IA or NH home in Winter, or air conditioning a NV/SC home in summer. Or just filling your vehicle anywhere in the US.

What a backhanded slap at Palin by the same people who did everything they could to literally destroy her. They are amoral.

"And his wife shouldn’t cry at a public speech about how brutalized he’s been by his rivals "

Wow

If they actually watched the video, they would know that when she was trying to hold back tears......

she was talking about missing her grandfather who had passed away.

They’re trying to use her as a club to beat up on Gov. Perry. “Sarah Palin” is shorthand for “complete idiot” in Jay’s world. After Mr. Cain went off the reservation on abortion, I may have to take a second look at the Texas governor. There’s no one else.

It SHOULD be.

Not until the folks in Iowa disengage from ethanol.

Ethanol is just one big huge fraud and by now everyone knows it. But for so long as the IA caucuses have political significance, the subsidies will continue.

I support Perry but I must say, I think his wife does him no favors playing the victim card—no matter how true she believes it to be or how unfair it seems.

When they were leaving the last debate she looked a little huffy— like she just wanted to get the L out of there. I can’t say I blame her but she must stuff all that down. No matter how hard it is to swallow.

I think he’s still getting his policy and plans squared out, so I’m not worried about that yet. He came in much later, so I think taking a little longer for the reveal is fine.

I did notice at a NH townhall (think it was) a couple of times he didn’t directly answer peoples questions, he did but in a round-about way. I think he needs to work on very direct answers.

I’m hoping he can pull it off.

Three things Rick Perry can learn from Sarah Palin.
1.) Hike up your skirt a bit. Use what you've got to get votes.
2.) Wear glass's it gives you an intellectual look.
3.) If you know that you can't win it. Get out of the race.

I beg to differ, he did not go off the reservation on abortion, he handled it just right. I am stunned by your reaction to his statement. It is how most every pro-life person including SP feels. One size does not fit all,and in the end it is a Family matter, especially rape and incest.

I predict that when Herman Cain pulls out and endorses Mitt Romney before Super Tuesday quite a few people may be forced to take a second look at the Texas Governor.

Personally I don't have a dog in this hunt as I am a unaffiliated registered voter and don't partake in big R Republican primaries. But it seems to me that Mr. Cain, a very likeable fellow could well end up being Romney's running mate. Those establishment types would do much to see that outcome.

You are filthy minded, and need to go back to the 1600’s.

It was on an earlier thread, I will try to look it up, but he is NOT pro choice. It is never the baby's fault, but I would never demand a woman that is raped by filthy scum of the earth or by a Family member (still filth) should carry that baby. It is not her fault either.

"After Mr. Cain went off the reservation on abortion,"

What happened here? Did he put it on the states?

First, one has to have natural conservative instincts like Sarah and that doesn't appear easy for some in these debates. Second, it's got to be hard to offload the liberal baggage that came with previously being a democrat (emotion vs logic- see "heartless", see "mandates" for the good of the children/collective/uninsured, etc.).

Whoever strikes first for individual rights, second for states rights, and promises to smash the layers and layers of usurped powers that have accumulated to the Federal leviathan will get my support.

The current role of the Federal government- affecting almost every aspect of our lives- was not what the Framers had in mind. It has more in common with Centrally Planned communist governments than anything American. And, as such, will not stand. Such governments fail because their premises are wrong. Learn this, Rick.

They pulled the thread, not sure why probably because it's insinuations were baloney.

I am totally behind Herman Cain now and will donate money like I would have to SP. HC is closest to SP on everything that counts, especially that he is not an insider crony capitalist bought and paid for.

A baby should die for the sins of the father. I have never been totally on Cain’s train, but this is going to hurt. I respect the man until I see this thread we are looking for.
