Gov. McDonnell will join Romney at Virginia event next week (Lt. Gov. Bolling loves Romney)

Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell (R) plans to join Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney at an event in Virginia next week, according to the governor's office.

Virginia's Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling will also attend what the governor's weekly schedule called a "grassroots event" at the Fairfax County Republican Committee Headquarters in Northern Virginia.

Romney's campaign will swing through Virginia next week, starting with a fundraising event in McLean on Tuesday evening. Virginia is a likely swing state in 2012.

Bolling has already indicated his support of Romney, but McDonnell said earlier this week that he won't endorse a Republican candidate until at least after Virginia's legislative elections this November.

When the primary season reaches the many-delegate states Romney will be virtually unstoppable. Especially if the conservative resistance reamins balkanized among a mish-mash of candidates. Our side has no coherence or strategy. The RINOs have wasted us again.

Romney has to show he can break 20% and he's just not doing it. The guy is a fringe candidate at best and quite possibly a failed candidate.

Best thing he could do for the Republican establishment now is simply pay off everybody's campaign debt and get out the way.

Perhaps, but my guess is McDonnell will end up endorsing Romney. The problem is most politicians - even good non-RINO Republicans like McDonnell, look at the more conservative alternatives to Romney and don't see anyone they think can actually win. Cain may be leading in the polls at the moment, but very few analysts and experienced elected officials think Herman could really win a general election because he is too much of a political novice and far too likely to implode due to gaffes and missteps. Pols like McDonnell will endorse who they think can actually win a general election, and with Perry showing so much weakness it looks to me like more and more that support will go to Romney.

If Romney wins and picks Rubio, I will vote 3rd party. I will never vote for a constitutionally ineligible ticket. I would vote for Clinton/Gore before Id vote for say Palin/Rubio.

McDonnell IS an establishment type. I am from VA... everything he does is for big business and the shadow government. He is socially conservative, but when push comes to shove, he is a country club republican.

I am from Virginia also and supported and voted for McDonnell. He is an excellent conservative governor, not some establishment country club type. His support of business is helping bring jobs to our state. McDonnell is probably one of the best governors in the nation, and if you don't think he is conservative enough then probably no one who is actually electable will ever satisfy you.

Cain endorsed Romney in 2008. Is he defined forever?

People endorse based on the field of candidates in the race. It doesn't mean they completely support the person, it just means they think the candidate they endorse is the best option at the time based on political positions, electability and ability to lead and get stuff done. Rush, Hannity, Levin, Ingraham, etc, also chose/endorsed Romney in 2008, are they defined forever?

Romney is a flip flopping chameleon, but folks like McDonnell may feel they have no other choice based on the other options.

He has an obsession with toll roads everywhere but Northern VA, where they ride free, he has his hand out for high speed rail and is even trying to get a duplicate service from Hampton Roads to Richmond that will save passengers a whopping 6 minutes, supports a new $6 billion tunnel for the port that doesn’t address congestion and would enact $6 tolls on the tunnel while ignoring I64, he dumping endless money into light rail in Norfolk, but can’t find the money to pave the roads, which have become a dangerous pothole slolom, and he supports public/private partnerships for developers across the state and wants the state getting involved in the hotel industry in Virginia Beach. Yes, he is a solid conservative on kitchen table issues, but at the local level, he is far from it.

For Pete’s sake! Just a few short weeks ago the RPV hosted a mega lunch in Richmond featuring Perry. When/if Cain or Bachmann or Gingrich or Santorum come to town, they will be just as graciously welcomed.

You've completely gone bonkers. A sitting governor is obligated to host a member of his own Party who is visiting the former's state, especially if that guest is running for POTUS.
It's a matter of protocol, not 'support'.
