New Iowa Poll: The Gingrich Surge (Herman Cain still in the lead, despite headline)
National Journal ^ | November 14, 2011 | Reid Wilson

Posted on 11/14/2011 3:56:40 PM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

For months, Iowa Republicans faced with a plethora of choices couldn't make up their minds. Now, it looks like the first caucus state is headed toward a decidedly split decision.

A new survey, conducted by the Republican firm the polling company, shows five candidates in double digits, with no one really running away from the pack. Businessman Herman Cain leads with 20 percent, statistically tied with former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, at 19 percent.

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, at 14 percent, is certainly within striking distance. Reps. Michele Bachmann and Ron Paul are both at 10 percent. Four other candidates scored at 5 percent or less, and only 13 percent of Iowa Republicans are undecided.

Cain's lead, according to pollster Kellyanne Conway, is based on what she calls the "Palin vote." The embattled businessman, fighting charges of sexual harrassment during his time at the National Restaurant Association in the late 1990s, is getting support from "those hard-core Republicans who coalesce around a candidate they seem as unfairly treated by the media or establishment," she said. That means the allegations, perhaps counter to conventional wisdom, are actually good for Cain's campaign. They're providing a temporary boost that will likely fade once the issue recedes from the headlines, especially if another Republican candidate finds him or herself at the center of the media scrum.

The poll, conducted Nov. 11-13, surveyed 501 likely Republican caucus-goers in Iowa, leaving a margin of error of plus or minus 4.4 percent. It's the second survey in a row, after the Des Moines Register poll released late last month, that shows Cain leading, and it's the first state-specific poll that has Gingrich surging too.

The Gingrich surge in Iowa mirrors two national polls, released over the weekend, that showed the former speaker close to the head of the pack.

Full results:

"If the Republican caucus for President were tomorrow and between Minnesota Representative Michelle Bachmann, Businessman Herman Cain, Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, Former Utah Governor Jon Huntsman, Former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson, Texas Representative Ron Paul, Texas Governor Rick Perry, Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, or Former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum, for whom would you vote?"

Cain -- 20%
Gingrich -- 19
Romney -- 14
Bachmann -- 10
Paul -- 10
Perry -- 5
Santorum -- 4
Huntsman -- 2
Johnson -- 1
Undecided -- 13

MSM seems to be pushing Newt. Why would that be? And if I had half the poll numbers of Wrong Paul, I might start thinking of leaving the race...

They are setting Newt up so they can tear him down in the next few weeks. Newt will be attacked viciously by the MSM on his mistress affair and ethics scandal in the House after the Thanksgiving holiday, count on it.

So 13 percent are undecided.

The lions share of this percentage will trend toward the top candidates in the polls.

Looks like its Cain and Gingrich pulling away, at least in Iowa.

They are spending quality time and effort taking turns destroying each of the candidates before the primaries while we still know nothing about the criminal sitting in the WH and all the treasonist, criminal activities of the DNC and his appointed cabinet members and unelected appointed agency heads. If anyone could be labeled as treasonist it’s the media doing thier part to enable the enemies of this country to maintain thier positions of strength and to complete the job they started, the end of this country

Polls don’t mean much in a caucus state, especially when it’s this tightly bunched. The question is who can turn their guys out for caucus. Whoever has the best organization on the ground could easily win a big victory.

Cain is going to hold on...and I believe he can still win the nomination.

He still has my support.

I believe he is not guilty at all of the sexual hatchet job they are trying to do...and I believe that while he does misstate some things, he does his level best to find out about issues when he does and set things aright as quickly as he can. He is not a politician and not spit and polished that way...but I believe he is honest and will do the best for America, and I believe he will put together a good cabinet to work with him to address the issues as President.

He has a record of being able to do that in industry and I do not believe he will lose that cabaility when elected.

We’ll all just have to see what the primary votes bring...and then support the winner to end the disgusting administration of the marxist we currently have in the White House.

He’s the next one Karl needs to get rid of. So for the next three or four weeks they’ll all be blowing smoke up his skirt and then [fill in the blank smear attack] and all the “conservatives” will be calling in to the radio talk shows and say that they “really like [fill in the blank: Newt, Cain, Bachmann, Perry]” but they just can’t even possibly dream of supporting them now after this huge [gaffe/smear/mistake] becasue we need someone who’s going to win.
It’s so old. I don’t even think these radio shows have real callers they all sound like they’re reading the same script. I guess only professional callers have the time to spend all day tryng to get through to the switchboard.

Mr. Cain won’t go away, so now the journalistas are trying to ignore him. That’s funny!

Some people expect robotic answering machines. Everyone has an imperfect mind, body, soul and will make a mistake now and then. Making a mistake in answering a question from some news bozo is not a disqualifying issue for a candidate, IMO. The great aspect of Cain, for me, is that he is not a politician. So what if he is running a different sort of campaign. It appears to me, the mistake for Cain is just that. Perhaps he has not hired enough so-called political experts such as the “brain”, Karl Rove, and, in their minds, makes Cain, automatically, illegitimate as a candidate.

Agreed. The media is building up Newt to get rid of Cain so that they can turn around and chop Newt off at the knees, leaving their boy Romney as the winner. Of course, they will express “concerns” about him in the general election and find that, “gee, we can’t support him after all.”

Cain is going to hold on...and I believe he can still win the nomination.

Not if today's video clips of him at the Milwaukee Sentinel Journal get any media attention. Cain's performance is far worse than Perry's gaffe. With much hemming and hawing and clearly not understanding the issues, Herman goes on the record supporting the "right" of public employees to unionize and flat out doesn't know what he is talking about when it comes to Libya. This guy will not win the GOP nomination.

I don't know but it scares me the way the MSM is pushing Newt right now. Skeletons in his closet?
