I want to preface this by stating the obvious: I am not a Ron Paul supporter. I am, however, a supporter of former Speaker Newt Gingrich. Now that I got my disclaimer out of the way I want to make comments about the Iowa Caucuses.
Over the past few weeks poll after poll have been taken in Iowa. For a while, Gingrich had a hefty lead there, but now it appears that Congressman Paul has surged to a top tier status in the Hawkeye state, even passing Romney and Gingrich in one poll. But how can this phenomenon be explained? Is it because Dr. Paul did so well in the last debates? (By most accounts, Paul came off as nutty at best.) Is it because Dr. Paul wants to end the Federal Reserve as we know it? (The common voter could care less about The Fed and probably doesn't even know it's role in the economy.) Is it because Dr. Paul has bold fresh ideas like letting Iran peacefully coexist while developing a nuclear weapon? (Yeah, that should endear him to Iowa voters.) Or is it because Dr. Paul continues to rant that the Founding Fathers would be in favor of his foreign policy? (The Founding Fathers were hardly isolationists...Thomas Jefferson was the first President to send US forces to a foreign country when he send the Navy to modern-day Libya to attack the Barbary Pirates. James Madison tried to invade Canada and he annexed parts of Western Florida that were under Spanish rule.)

Ron Paul is not a threat at all.
He looks good in polls because lots of young people love him.
Problem is, those young folks don’t turn out the vote, so polls are meaningless.

Maybe it is the dopers who think he will legalize drugs. Do they not know he has never done anything the entire time he has been in Washington? What makes them think he will do something now?

Ron Paul knows that he will not be the Republican candidate, regardless of how things turn out in Iowa. (Not every state has Iowa-style caucuses where Paul’s supporters can bully the outcome.)
So why does he run?
Perhaps he is an issues candidate, hoping to simply have his opinions heard on a wider platform. I can respect that. Government is too big, the Fed is past it’s sell-by date, and while I completely disagree with his foreign policy positions, he has the right to speak out. Issues candidates are fine as long as they know when to get out and quit dividing the party.
Or maybe he doesn’t mind dividing the party and is simply trying to raise his profile before launching a third-party run. If that is the case, then he might as well switch parties and campaign for Obama right now, because pretty much any of the potential third-party plays out there will do nothing more than secure a second term for Obama and his “end of America” plans. I regularly think it would be nice to see a viable third party in American politics, but it may take a generation for something like that to take root. And Ron Paul is not the kind of visionary who can pull that off.
Perhaps he really believes he can win. If that is the case it is hard for me to see him as anything other than delusional—not the kind of trait I am looking for in a candidate.
I believe the word you are looking for is "vulnerable." I try not to correct people's vocabulary, but this is the second time I have been confused by your use of a word that means worthy of respect or reverence. And I don't think you mean to say that Ron Paul would make America more worthy of respect from foreign countries.

Seems pretty clear y’all are wetting your pants this guy might win the Iowa caucus. Already the noise is that “Iowa doesn’t matter” and “Paul is just getting his 15 minutes.” Guess we’ll see about that in New Hampshire, since y’all have evidently ceded Iowa to him already.
No. It’s a reverse Operation Chaos (”Anonymous”/DailyPOS/HuffPOS/college morons from another state), but they won’t show on caucus night.
