Palin: I'd vote for Gingrich in South Carolina
The Politico ^ | January 17, 2012 | Alexander Burns

Sarah Palin's not quite endorsing Newt Gingrich for president, but if she were a South Carolina voter, he's the one she'd cast her ballot for this weekend.

The idea, Palin explained on Fox News, would be to keep the primary season going. Via Juana Summers, here's the case Palin made:

"I can tell you what I would do if I were a South Carolinian…If I were a South Carolinian though, and each one of these primaries and caucuses are different, Sean, I want to see this thing continue because iron sharpens iron. Steel sharpens steel. These guys are getting better in their debates. They are getting more concise. They are getting more grounded in what their beliefs are and articulating what their ideas are for getting America back on the right track and getting Americans working again. If I had to vote in South Carolina order to keep this thing going, I would vote for Newt and I would want it to continue. More debates, more vetting of candidates."

She also praised Gingrich's debate performance Monday night:(continued)

Close enough for me. Will it be good enough for South Carolinians?

She’s right! We don’t need a coronation if Mitt wins S.C.

This isn’t an endorsement for Newt but a strategic one for now to keep this thing going further along

I just hate that some FReepers are going overboard with this and not understanding what’s going on

Sarah needs to shut her mouth and let people decide for themselves.

She’s been playing a game. And it’s gotten old.

That’s my take as well. If she’s not going to come right out and endorse him, then she’s just playing too cute by half. Time for her to butt out, or put her money where her mouth is.

She’s smart enough to know that Newt is the only one left that can derail a disastrous Romney nomination.

Santorum has slipped back down and Perry is finished. Newt has been slowly coming back into play.

If Romney wins South Carolina we’re screwed.

Some folks say to Mrs. Palin: “Shut up!”

They are not very polite!

Go Newt Go!

she said that she isn’t ready to endorse anyone yet but to keep the process along (in essence to block Mitt from a coronation if he wins S.C.) she would support Newt in S.C.

Im not a supporter of Newt but its wise to let this process continue instead of it going straight to Mitt, i want Newt to win or at least to keep Romney from going into the high 40’s Saturday night

She’s playing it cool, getting the word out without creating a distraction that would inevitably happen if she endorsed now, and put the spotlight on her rather than on Newt for these critical next days.

I was fantasizing earlier: Based on the Newt we’ve seen in the past couple of debates, I just can’t see him quietly riding into the sunset if he doesn’t get the R nomination. So (here we go..) suppose Newt just says Screw It, this is too important to just let the RNC money machine win by default, and launches his own 3rd Party run?

“Everyone” says that a 3rd part would just guarantee a 2nd term for Obama, but I’m not so sure “everyone” is willing to accept RINO Romney. So what if Newt were to Go Rogue, and add another rock-ribbed Conservative named Sarah Palin as his VP?

Yeah, I said it’s a fantasy but knowing Newts sense of history, I can’t count it out completely. If there were ever a time for a bold unconventional strategy - this is it.

So, “she’s been playing a game.”

Why don’t you explain it to us who don’t understand it?

I agree. We need to take our time and give the candidates more time to espouse views, not settle on one candidate right away. If we don’t we’ll get Romney. It’s as simple as that. And Newt needs time to show he won’t lurch off the deep end again, and should he win the nomination, go over the cliff again, handing the election to Obama. One never knows with him, and that is the dilemma. Who wants to see what has taken place since Iowa to continue? This is truly disgusting. It’s beneath us all, as conservatives, to clean house with one another, making bad blood, then assume we can all just join hands and go forward. There were a lot of vicious lies and innuendos racing around. The left was loving it. We don’t need to be their entertainment. Even the rhetoric on freerepublic has become disgusting and incendiary over much of this.

I’ve been thinking the same thing myself. That if Romney is crowned, Newt needs to go 3rd Party.

This isn’t an endorsement, it’s a strategery.

To say this is an endorsement would be like saying Rush endorsed Hillary because he came up with the strategery of Operation Chaos.

Why don’t you explain it to us who don’t understand it?

Why don't you dial her up instead?

She was handed a big stick.

IMO, all she did was stir the sh!+pot.

You just stated your opinion. Does that mean that you are not letting people think for themselves?

If you want Sarah to shut up, just say so.

But the stating of an opinion is not “telling people what to decide.”

What’s wrong with what she said, that continued competition makes everybody stronger?

I think the idea here is that, since it appears that Romney is going to win the nomination (just sayin’), then at least:

(1) make him work really hard to earn it, and —

(2) make him go on the record again and again with what he says he will do if elected President (such as repeal Obamacare), and —

(3)make clear to him in no uncertain terms that his election (should it occur) is a business decision, not a lovefest, and he better well realize how very accountable to conservatives he is going to be if he makes it to the White House.

That is all.

Yes. That is exactly it. For a mere $1000 donation, I'll make sure you are standing there at the end wondering just where that big chunk from your butt disappeared to.
