Haley: South Carolinians don't care about Romney's tax returns
Fox News' On The Record ^ | January 20, 2012 | Greta Van Susteren

Posted on 01/21/2012 4:17:38 PM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

Special Guests: S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley

GRETA VAN SUSTEREN, FOX NEWS HOST: As we noted, we are only about 8 hours and 50 minutes away from the polls opening in South Carolina. And there is only a tiny, tiny, tiny gap between the two front-runners, and the other two candidates could pull off a big surprise tomorrow. That's why this race is so gripping.

South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley endorsed Governor Romney and has been hitting the campaign trail for him. Right now, in the latest poll, though, Governor Romney is number two. And she joins us.

Governor Haley, welcome. And before I start talking, I want to wish you Happy Birthday. And it's tough turning 30, but you'll get used to it.

(LAUGHTER)

SOUTH CAROLINA GOV. NIKKI HALEY: Hey, Greta, thank you so much. It's a great night in South Carolina. We're very excited.

VAN SUSTEREN: All right, now, minutes ago, you were with Governor Romney. I know you -- you must be watching the poll numbers. He's been slipping. What's your theory on why he's been slipping? And I know you're going to stand behind him for tomorrow in the race. Why do you think he's going to win? Two questions.

HALEY: You know what? He's not slipping. And I will tell you, we've been all over the state today. We had hundreds of people in the midlands standing in the rain to cheer on Governor Romney. We've got all these people behind us at 9:00 o'clock at night, while it's raining outside. The state is on fire. They saw the debate last night. There was only one jobs president on the stage, and it is showing today across the state. There is energy and electricity like I've never seen....

LOL! The only one who cares about Romney’s tax returns is Romney himself, who obviously doesn’t want to release them because he thinks there’s something in there that just might not look good.

Not a Mitt fan, however this issue is BS and we are letting Obama’s media affect our rational decisions. How many people know that Romney has not had control of his finances since 2002? His money is in the same blind trust it was in 4 years ago. He pays 15% capital gains on his income because that is how capital gains is tax. The law firm that his handling his finances is one of the best in the country. He has also given more to his church and charity last year than Obama has given in his lifetime.

If Newt (only choice left), who I am voting for had his way, Romney would pay 0% on this income. All of his income has already been taxed at the full rate. This is double taxation. I am for a 0% capital gain tax to stimulate the economy and Newt and almost all conservatives agrees with me on this point. It is regretful that conservatives spout off without a clue of what they are talking about.

I do not care about Mitt's finances or his money. I DO care about his willingness to work with the Dems in DC, which he is fond of telling us. I DO care about his flip flops on Romnicare, guns, abortion, gays, and I DO care about his cluelessness about what it will take to turn this country around. I DO care about his being the darling of Rove, et al, which makes him suspect. I DO care about his lackluster performances.

IMHO Reid and Pelosi, Shumer and co would wipe the floor with him.

That’s fine, attack him on any stand that you believe in. But defend him (or should I say our core princibles) when conservatism is attacked... We have to stand up for what we believe in, even if we don’t like the person being attacked. This attack is not against Romney, it is against conservatism.

I don't see what the big deal about Milt's tax returns is either. Forty Eight percent of the maggots who feed off of this country have never even seen a tax return. Why should they even give a ....?

Go Newt!

Oh yea, oppose Romney because he is for the capital gains (even increasing it) tax for the rich. He is completely tone deaf to our core principles. But actual income tax thing is a non-issue due to his trust and standard tax rate for income of his type.

What's regretful is that no one has figured out the real reason he doesn't want them out: Millions and millions of dollars given to a cult that thinks their members (Mitt in this case) can one day become a God of their own planet, and that in fact God was once just like you and me. Obama, of course through his surrogates, will have a field day with Mitt's Mormon beliefs. But I'm just another conservative spouting out without a clue. (also, I call complete b.s. on Mitt having no control of his money. He didn't walk up to someone randomly on the street and say, “here, look after my money”. Romney has attempted to set up plausible deniability with every foible in his life. He is the one with truly weak character.

It’s the deductions for the tithes given to the Mormon church that he doesn’t want to become an issue.

Apparently they don’t care about his worthless promises and false prattling about being a “true conservative” either.

Greenhorn Nikki has found out the repercussions from making an endorsement.

Her future doesn’t look too good at the moment.

Again what is being attacked is the 15% rate he pays on capital gains. If Newt had his way this rate would be 0%. What we need to defend is a lower capital gains tax not more or worry about loopholes for a tax that should not exist. I could care less if his money was in a blind trust (which might be true or not), but a high power law firm is claiming to be handling it and are aware of the scrutiny. As far as I am concern he should pay 0% on his capital gains and he is free to give his money away however he chooses.

As far as the religious aspect... not responding because it would not be kind.

Someone once said, “politics ain’t beanbags”. I’m not trying to be mean as opposed to kind when pointing out the Mormon aspect of Mitt’s taxes. I’m just facing reality (as Mitt has) that it will cost him votes.

“... this issue is BS...”

For all the reasons you stated, the above is true.

For one really big reason, it is not: appearances.

Gov. Romney cannot maintain a posture hiding something from the voters. It appears he is shielding unfavorable information and in a political race ‘appearance’ means everything.

Since you talk as though politically knowledgable, you know what I mean.
