Romney paints Gingrich as mentally unstable
The Washington Post The Plum Line ^ | January 26, 2012 | Greg Sargent

The New York Times reports today — based on unclear sourcing — that Mitt Romney has endorsed a strategy of raising doubts about Newt Gingrich’s “emotional stability.”

Well, if that’s the case, here’s Exhibit A.

A Florida source passes along a mailer that the Romney campaign — not the pro-Romney Super PAC; his campaign — just dropped in the state, and it comes as close as possible to making that case, hitting Gingrich as “erratic” and “reckless.”

The mailer also prominently features a quote from my colleague Jennifer Rubin, describing Gingrich’s “well of sleaze.” Here’s page one:

And here’s page two:

(GRAPHIC AT LINK)

This the sort of attack that’s probably too hot for the Romney campaign to be directly associated with on the airwaves, which may explain why it’s being pushed via mail, which is relatively under the radar.

The mailer underscores the lengths the Romney campaign is now willing to go to in order to destroy Gingrich’s character....

Romney looked like an idiot having to admit he never saw the ad that he personally approved smearing Gingrich

I think this all will help Santorum in the long run, but we don’t need a clear winner for several months yet.

I have about the same chance as Senator Santorum. If Speaker Gingrich loses next Tuesday, we’re almost certainly stuck with Gov. Romney.

There won’t be a long run if Romney wins Florida. Santorum needed to drop out, but he’s in for himself.

A common tactic. They used it against Goldwater. With Goldwater, they enlisted psychiatrists to declare Goldwater as too unstable to be trusted with the responsibility of the Presidency.

I hope you are not equating Newt to Goldwater.

Newt lost me with his attacks on Romney’s wealth and jumping on the anti-”self-deportation” bandwagon.

There is plenty of room for argument and disagreement w/o joining in the class warfare.

You had to expect this—Newt is a Monster, a tyrant creature, cold, heartless, a puppet for tea party mad men.

I may boycott Mitt if he is the nominee, all because of this foolishness.

I am not equating Newt to Goldwater. Being against the Bain Capitol business model is not being anti-capitalist. When you understand it’s method and find it’s disagreeable, you are doing just what one would do if he found a loan shark disagreeable. If you understood Bain Capitol’s loan tactic, you would too.

I am glad that Newt got Mitt to explain during the debate his Cayman Island banking arrangements and his Swiss Bank accounts. To the ordinary person, someone who does it is doing it to avoid taxes. That, my friend, is not class warfare. It is wanting to know why a candidate is hiding money to avoid taxes. Don’t you know that?

Santorum is an unattractive candidate who has never been anything but part of the establishment; the only thing that helps him is that he has not been the target of Romney’s (and the GOP’s) smear machine because he simply wasn’t important enough.

He and Paul didn’t have to defend themselves from outrageous personal attacks and innuendo by Romney last night and could actually say a word or two about the issues. Nor did they have the moderator trying to stir up personal attacks. I thought last night’s event, with its “Fight Club” music and the constant attempt to turn it into a giant personal attacks, was disgraceful. BTW, Santorum has also sent out some nasty personal attacks on Gingrich; he’s running out of money and he hasn’t done as much here in FL as he did in SC, and of course he’s also just letting Romney do it for him and enjoying the results.

Yes, the best strategy is to keep the usurper’s name off the states’ ballots!
With obozo gone, we can vote anyone we want without fearing another 4 years of obozo!

Everyone should do their utmost to avoid paying more taxes than required by law. Including keeping money offshore if it is worth it for you.

Not sure what is so bad about Bain. They are partners/investors in many successful brands and companies.

I hope it is not just the KB Toys deal that makes your mind up for you.

In it for himself?

It's people who think like you that are why we keep getting stuck with turds like McCain, Romney and Gingrich.

Santorum was the ONLY ONE on that stage who takes a stand against the global warming fraud, cap and trade, and has always been against any form of Romney/Obama care. (And he doesn't have a history of doing the opposite.)

I'll take Santorum over Gingrich or Romney any day.

Yep, it’s the same crap the Mitwitts did to Fred Thompson in 2008. Just more proof of that pious LDS-er Romney’s “Christian” principles.

Why do politicians who wrap themselves in religion act like politics trumps the Ten Commandments? It’s because their religiosity is a phony as they are.
