Two days after losing the special election for Gabrielle Giffords's old House seat, Republican Jesse Kelly has decided to forego a run for Arizona's new 2nd Congressional District this fall.
"Looking at the results from Tuesday, we have decided to withdraw from the race for Congress in AZ-02 and to seek other opportunities," Kelly said in a statement Thursday."I will forever be thankful to our generous supporters and volunteers."
Kelly's withdrawal vaults Air Force veteran Martha McSally to front-runner status for the GOP nomination in the new district. McSally finished second behind Kelly in the special Republican primary earlier this year, but she actually outpaced him in election-day votes just a couple months after joining the race with zero name recognition; Kelly won the special primary with a hefty early-vote advantage.

Jesse Kelly is a good man and good patriot, but this wasn’t his time and he made the right decision. I think that Martha McSally has great potential and could become a celebrity if she wins.

It’s a shame that Kelly didn’t beat Giffords in 2010 when he had the wind in his back; his largish loss to Barber in Tuesday’s special election is a sure sign that he would have an extremely difficult time winning the regular general election this November in a redrawn district that is 2% less Republican than the current one.
Yes, Martha McSally can win this race, and I agree that she could become a star in Congress.

A star for what? Gender quotas for assignments and promotions? Putting women into combat? Relaxing training standards to accomodate females?
No, I was thinking that she’d become a star because she’d be a pro-life, pro-gun female representing Gabby Giffords’s old district.
Has McSally really come out in favor of putting women in combat situations, gender quotas and watering down training standards to accomodate women?
she sounds like a pretty good leader to me......she was the one who stood up to the Saudi’s about women soldiers having to wear burkas off base....just donated...

McSally is a back-stabbing snake! Her campaign worked with the Barber camp, especially in Cochise County, to help defeat Kelly in the special election. Politics will be a good fit someone with her (lack of) character.
