GOP runoff candidates Mullin, Faught spar over 'single payer' comment (Oklahoma runoff)

Republican 2nd Congressional District runoff opponents Markwayne Mullin and George Faught continued to tussle Thursday over something said by Mullin last August and used by Faught in a recent campaign spot.

The setting this time was Mullin's Broken Arrow plumbing business, where a representative for Faught showed up to hand out a statement from Faught after Mullin essentially called Faught a liar at a Thursday afternoon press conference.

Mullin's campaign team eventually shooed the Faught operative off the grounds, but not before he'd passed around copies of Faught's statement.

At issue is Mullin's use of the term "single payer" during a discussion of health insurance and health-care reform last August. On video and audio released separately by the two campaigns, Mullin says, "To fix the issue, you know, I think the single-payer, single-pay system would be the best."

Mullin goes on to say everyone should pay something for health care, that businesses should not have to pay more, and that he would depend on the "professional field" for advice.

Faught's campaign began using the "single payer" comment to link Mullin to President Barack Obama and the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, coined Obamacare by opponents.

I don’t know a whole lot about these candidates, but Markwayne Mullin strikes me as a rich boy running on his daddy’s fortune, while George Faught is a successful small businessman who has worked for the conservative cause for years. In addition, Faught is the first Republican state legislator from Muskogee in American history. I hope that he wins the election.

Faught was my choice already but those comments by Mullin seal the deal.

Mullin seemed good as a self-funding candidate from the private sector, but if he’s a potential RINO vote, that’s a no-go.

Nothin’ beats a proud Oakie from Muskogee.

I am a county RNC officer in this district. My county has hosted both these candidates at meetings prior to the primary. I liked them both, they are Christian family men. From what I have seen, there is a good chance that Mullin’s comment was taken out of context. As for his job qualifications, he has never held office (plus!) and is a busniness owner, who took over his father’s failing plumbing business at age 18 or 19, and made it into a 100+ employee success do to sheer hard work. He is now about 36, married to his highschool sweetheart since age 18 and has three kids. He struck me as a straightforward patriot who wants to see change in Washington. I would probably be fine with either one winning, I just hate seeing a campaign go negative at this point.

The real problem here is Mullin got about 43% of the vote in the primary, and Faught got just 23%.

So Faught is using smear tactics to discredit his opponent, in the runoff. Mullin is better known and better financed. He also has a Saturday radio show on KRMG in Tulsa, and runs commercials on local TV. During the primary race I saw any commercials for Faught, he is way behind and is desperate for votes.

Faught is basically known.

BTW this is Dan Borens seat (Dem 2ndD) it is an open seat and the only Dem seat left in Ok. On the Dem side it has gotten real nasty. This should be an easy Rep pickup. The last thing we need are the Rep candidates going after each other.

I voted for Mullin in the primary and I’ll vote him until.

I don’t want to overreact but these comments are potentially dangerous. I do not trust the dude.

George Faught is a conservative Republican who is popular enough with blue-collar Democrats that he was elected in a legislative district in Muskogee. He is a proven conservative, not merely someone like Markwayne Mullin who talks a good game (except when he slips up and says that he supports a “single-payer” health-care system, which would be even more socialist than Obamacare) but has no record on which to stand.

George Faught will win the OK-02 for the GOP, which is not something that we can take for granted, since the district has been represented by Democrats for the past 12 years and for 84 out of the past 90 years (!). And once in Congress, Faught can be counted on to be a principled conservative vote that will not bend to establishment pressure.

The only other Republican to have represented the OK-02 in Congress during the past 90 years—Senator Tom Coburn, who is also from Muskogee—has announced that he will not run for a third U.S. Senate term in 2016. After four years in the House, George Faught would be a natural replacement for Dr. Coburn in the Senate, so making the right choice in 2012 could have important repercussions for years to come.

Conservatives from Oklahoma and across the nation should support George Faught. I invite those who have the means and interest to donate to his campaign, since, unlike Markwayne Mullin, George Faught does not have his daddy’s millions to spend on his campaign. http://www.georgefaught.com/
