Why I Refuse to Vote for Obama: The case against casting a ballot for the president...
The Atlantic ^ | September 26, 2012 | Conor Friedersdorf

Posted on 09/26/2012 10:06:36 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

Tell certain liberals and progressives that you can't bring yourself to vote for a candidate who opposes gay rights, or who doesn't believe in Darwinian evolution, and they'll nod along. Say that you'd never vote for a politician caught using the 'n'-word, even if you agreed with him on more policy issues than his opponent, and the vast majority of left-leaning Americans would understand. But these same people cannot conceive of how anyone can discern Mitt Romney's flaws, which I've chronicled in the course of the campaign, and still not vote for Obama.

Don't they see that Obama's transgressions are worse than any I've mentioned?

I don't see how anyone who confronts Obama's record with clear eyes can enthusiastically support him. I do understand how they might concluded that he is the lesser of two evils, and back him reluctantly, but I'd have thought more people on the left would regard a sustained assault on civil liberties and the ongoing, needless killing of innocent kids as deal-breakers.

Nope.

There are folks on the left who feel that way, of course. Some of them were protesting with the Occupy movement at the DNC. But the vast majority don't just continue supporting Obama. They can't even comprehend how anyone would decide differently. In a recent post, I excoriated the GOP and its conservative base for operating in a fantasy land with insufficient respect for empiricism or honest argument.

I ended the post with a one-line dig at the Democratic Party. "To hell with them both," I fumed.

Said a commenter, echoing an argument I hear all the time:

I mean, how can someone who just finished writing an article on how the Republican Party is too deluded, in the literal sense, to make good decisions about anything not prefer the other party?(continued)

If Obama is committed to economic equalization for all the people doesn’t that necessitate an end to personal freedom?

Obamas victory is relying on people who will not ask or question anything he does or says. Critical thought not allowed or even wanted.

I wonder what the author thinks not voting for Obama will achieve.

Is he hoping that Obama looses to show the Democrat candidates that they need to hem a tight line on civil rights the next time around, and that this will produce a better long-term outcome?

Or is it purely cathartic - he just either wants to wash his hands of his culpability so he can sleep better.

Was USS Taylor a destroyer escort or corvette?

Originally was designated as a Destroyer Escort, when I served on her, she was designated a Destroyer ... never a corvette. I don’t think the US Navy had any ships designate as corvettes, at least in the modern Navy (WWII onward).

The corvette was a British thing.

The author is a delusional idiot anyway. With comments like, "Obama terrorizes innocent Pakistanis on an almost daily basis", it's clear to see that this wingnut blames the US for every problem in the world today; that America is the only evil - oh so EVIL!! - there is.

Liberalism is a mental disease.

There is a difference between standing on principle and being just plain obstinate. In the face of clear evidence that your decision does more harm than good, you're being obstinate in refusing to change your decision.

Just my opinion

Next weekend I’ll be with the very few remaining shipmates from USS Stafford (DE-411) who are able to attend a reunion. They’ve met for many years and their number has dwindled until only a few remain. The Stafford was sister ship to Sammy B. Roberts which was lost at the Battle of Samar. The Stafford was struck by a Kamikazi at Lingayen Gulf. Every reunion they have a nice dinner on Saturday night and remember the sailors lost in that attack as well as all those that have gone before. Now both children and grand-children have taken over to keep the ship and shipmate’s memory alive. It truly is a very special thing that brings tears to my eyes just thinking about it. This year may be the last one for any of the shipmates.

Not a big Romney fan either, but going to vote for him anyway.

I’m voting against Obama and all the people that want him in there.

Nobody said the Tea Party’s work was done after Mitt get’s elected.

“I refuse to vote for either candidate.”

THAT’LL show America!

Most of us here aren’t ignoring what’s at stake. I won’t post what else I think.
