As Partisan Rancor Rises, States That Back a Loser Will Be Punished
The Daily Beast ^ | October 5, 2012 | Joel Kotkin

Never mind the big-tent debate talk from both Barack Obama and Mitt Romney about how their respective politics will benefit all Americans. There’s a broader, ugly truth that as the last traces of purple fade from the electoral map, whoever wins will have little reason to take care of much of the country that rejected them.

At least since the dissolving of the “solid South” in the late ’50s and early ’60s, both parties have competed to extend their reach to virtually every region. As recently as 1996, Democrat Bill Clinton could compete in the South, winning several states in the mid-South and even in the heart of Dixie, including Louisiana, Arkansas, Kentucky, and Tennessee. President Obama has about as much chance of winning these states this year as Abraham Lincoln did in 1860—giving him little reason to consider them in a second term.

In the Clinton years, powerful Democrats hailed from what we now call red states not only in the South but also in the Great Plains. South Dakota’s Tom Daschle served as both Senate majority and minority leader, and Louisiana’s John Breaux and North Dakota’s Kent Conrad and Byron Dorgan were also players.

After his 2008 win, Obama dismissed Republican objections to his stimulus with a two-word rejoinder: “I won.” But it’s become clear since that neither party is willing to accept the other’s claim of a popular mandate for its agenda. And the log jam probably won’t be broken in November—especially if, as seems like the most likely outcome, Obama wins a second term while Republicans hold the House and edge closer to retaking the Senate....

Bit of a windbag, isn't he? What do you think of his premise? If I remember correctly, LBJ closed military bases and did other things to penalize states that voted for Barry Goldwater.

Waiting for Prez Mittens tells Calif to do what Gerald Ford didn’t tell N.Y. In the 70’s. Anyone remember?

Go to hell! Although I much prefer the more genteel “No soup for you”

After Romney wins, I want to punish the blacks by asking them to come and join us at the banquet table of life instead of sitting out on the porch waiting for their Democrat masters to throw them some scraps. I want to punish the government workers by having millions of new private sector jobs that will allow them to quit their government job and work someplace where you are paid according to ability and not for what color or sex you are and how long you’ve been occupying a chair. I would like to see taxpayers punished by reducing their taxes and leaving them more money to spend on things they want and need. And this helps create more of those private sector jobs.

You have no idea what kind of payback should be coming if Obama loses. It SHOULD make the Grand Inquisition look like a picnic.

Routing out the traitors and crooks in the Obama Administration is going to be a full-time job, for years.

I’m signing up right now. I’ve been rooting out commies and crooks for decades. Love it. Love my country. I might even do it for free.

Call me, Pres. Romney, even at 3:00 AM. My phone is never off for my country.

Obama promises to bring states that vote for him again the same prosperity he brought the first time.

Awesome Idea! Just not much of an incentive to a robber, leech, or looter.

The socialist left should have thought about getting along with the tea party and conservative republicans after the Obama win, when he met with the Republicans for the first time in his new Presidency, he simply gave them the middle finger across his forehead and smirked stating: “ elections have consequences.” Well, guess what, elections do have consequences and the left is about to get slapped in the face with that reality!

Would you be referring to "Drop Dead" by any chance?

Most important thing to me is NO BAILOUT for California!

Obviously, Obama thinks this way but I don’t think Republican politicians “punish” blue states. I don’t think it crosses their minds.

I have a dream, that somewhere in the dark recesses of Romney's mind, the ghost of Detroit is forever whispering "Avenge me."

I love it that Liberals only notice problems and raise them to the level of issues, when they threaten to affect liberals. It's not a problem before then. Did Joel Kotkin ever report on the fact that Obama never issued a disaster declaration for the Texas drought? I'll bet money he didn't and wouldn't make the connection if he did.

Skunks. All of them.
