NASHVILLE — Senate Speaker Ron Ramsey says there's a good chance Democrats will be left with just seven seats in the Tennessee state Senate after the Nov. 6 election.
House Speaker Beth Harwell's most optimistic Republican scenario has the minority party with just 24 representatives remaining.
They and other Republican leaders say there's virtually no doubt that the GOP will hit a new high-water mark in the 2012 elections by gaining a two-thirds "super majority" in both chambers of the Legislature. There is considerable confidence in Republican ranks that they will go beyond that to what some are calling "a super duper majority."
Democrats concede the probability of a super majority, which can be achieved by Republicans gaining just two seats each in the House and the Senate, and do not dispute the possibility that things could be a lot worse than that for them.
"We're going to get outspent $3 or $4 to one. They're done redistricting so it will help their candidates. And we've got a president who is not popular with a lot of people," said House Democratic Caucus Chairman Mike Turner. "If we can come back with 34 seats, they will have done a terrible job."
He does, however, think that it's possible the Democrats could break even, partially because of a "rogues gallery" of Republican candidates this year that could turn off voters, and partially because of a trend toward "people not hating Obama as much as they did two years ago."

A year ago, we came here from the Peoples Republic of California. I feel much better about this election than 2008’s.
A family member who is a resident of TN is living with us for awhile in NC. He told me Friday there is no point to him voting, because his guy will lose in TN. I told him that his guy is going to lose in NC too. Doing my part to discourage the other Dim currently residing in the house from voting too.
MA in reverse. It should be interesting whether TN ($36.5K) will ever catch up to MA ($52.9K) in terms of per capita income, given that MA has the advantages of top colleges within its borders, location and centuries of capital investment back when all of TN was a rural backwater.
Don’t worry, if they get a super majority, they’ll probably make a RINO Speaker like in Texas.
The difficulty for TN is the same as that for all low-income states - the talent sees the higher incomes in the blue states and head over there.

To get 1/3 of the Hispanic vote needed to win elections, a lot of TX politicians need to be RINO's. Demographics is destiny. I expect that if the GOP is to survive, it will eventually end up adopting every pillar of the welfare state and become more or less like the right-wing parties of Europe - religious socialists not a lot different from Huckabee. As someone who thinks FDR was the worst president this country has ever had, on account of the welfare state programs he introduced to the country, I'm not happy about this, but more or less resigned to it.
If they get 2/3rds majorities in both houses, while Tennessee has a somewhat convoluted process to pass state constitutional amendments, which will go to a voter referendum, it sounds like an excellent opportunity to do so.

As such, they could be a test bed of “10th Amendment” laws, to reassert their state sovereignty against the national government.

I hate Obama more than I did two years ago!
Really need to get rid of Strauss and Dewhurst but unfortunately I don’t see that happening any time soon.
Being resigned to it is national suicide
Hopefully the Tennessee GOP will govern well and make their state the economic envy of the rest of the nation so we can use them as a positive example of what happens when the Republicans run things without the ‘progressives’ throwing monkey wrenches into the works.
(Then please export some of your good people to California to try to help straighten out our mess.)
