Report: Boehner Offers Tax Hike to Obama on Fiscal Cliff (Rejected, speakership in jeopardy?)

Late Saturday evening, a source from the White House said the Speaker of the House John Boehner had put tax rate hikes on the table in fiscal cliff negotiations. The White House promptly rejected the offer, since Boehner also wanted entitlement reform as a compromise. But the announcement is likely to exacerbate the war within the Republican Party with regard to tax policy in the run-up to the fiscal cliff.

According to a Reuters source, Boehner agreed to a tax rate hike of an unspecified size on high earners – a term the source left undefined. The source said that Obama thought that the offer represented “progress.”

Politico reports that Boehner wants to raise taxes for those earning upward of $1 million beginning January 1...

sounds like he made him an offer he couldn’t accept. Why does that jeopardize his speakership? It’s all part of the game.

Because Obama wants to completely discredit and destroy the GOP. While the Crybaby speaker just wants everyone to get along ang play nice. My guess is Barry wants all out victory with the Speaker going in front of cameras and saying that tax cuts caused the financial crisis. Boehner just wants a small gimmie for so he can go back to the Republicans and declare victory no matter how hollow.

A Breitbart subscriber has posted an interesting comment:

The GOP will be in better shape by telling Boehner / Cantor / McCarthy to get fu-ked / pound sand & simply go off the cliff and deal with the aftermath vs. cutting more deals to kick the can down the road again. Let sequestration happen - all those "devastating" defense cuts that will simply bring defense spending back to 2007 levels. Let all the Obamacare taxes kick in. Let all the Bush tax cuts expire - bring it on! But do NOT, under ANY circumstances, raise the debt ceiling again!!! Let's go! The Tea Partiers should keep their fingerprints off any garbage legislation.

Kicking the can down the road only delays the inevitable confrontation closer to the next election in which the Republicans will bear the blame if they ever actually pull the trigger and exercise their constitutional prerogatives in the House of Representatives. Perhaps better to bring on the confrontation now and let Obama deal with the economic and political consequences for the next two years.

The memory of the electorate is short, let them forget that the media told them two years ago that it was the Republicans' failure to capitulate that has caused the gridlock which has led to economic pain.

Because Obama wants to completely discredit and destroy the GOP

Because Obama wants to completely destroy America. The GOP is doing a good job of destroying itself.

It's Barry doesn't want to accept what Boner is offering and NOT that he couldn't accept it.

You may have it wrong. Boehner has backbone. He stands up to and won’t back down against the people he is against - conservzatives.

You have pretty well captured the situation. Obama is going for total victory and Boehner is playing his supporting roll. If Boehner caves, the GOP will be swept from power in 2014 and simply become the Loyal Opposition to a one party rule. Boehner has real power through the appropriations process and the debt ceiling, but he won't use it.

“Because Obama wants to completely discredit and destroy the GOP.”

...and that’s it. He’s won EVERY other battle against the Republicans, and the Republicans already announced that their fallback position is to give Obama what he wants - why should Obama give them an inch now?

Yesterday, Boehner cancelled the Saturday Republican radio address because of the school shooting in Connecticut, saying, “There will be no weekly Republican address this weekend so that President Obama can speak for the entire nation at this time of mourning...”

So he gave Obama the floor to politicize the tragedy.

Reprehensible!

If he caves on taxes, the GOP’s core beliefs are thrown in the trash.

Reckless spending by O is rewarded by increasing taxes and debt?

If the Democrats think that they have a problem now with Boehner just wait and see what comes next.
