Democrats Want a Woman on the 2016 Ticket
New York Magazine ^ | January 7, 2013 | Kat Stoeffel

Democratic strategists will not let Hillary Clinton or her blood clot stop them from getting a woman on the 2016 presidential ticket, Politico reports. Even if Clinton sticks to her word and does not run for president — something no one seemed to believe until her recent health scare — activists are still hoping to leverage the 2012 gender gap into a female nominee. “After the roles Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin played in the 2008 campaign,” Politico writes, “it would be hard for many to accept another cycle like the 2012 presidential race, which featured two all-male national tickets.”

Especially when one notes how many strong female contenders there have been in the Republican party, like South Carolina’s Nikki Haley, New Hampshire’s Kelley Ayotte, and former VP nominee Sarah Palin. The head of the Center or American Progress, Neera Tanden, told Politico:

“It’s critical that we have a woman on the ticket in some form or fashion. Given that the Republican Party has produced a woman VP candidate, I think it’s important that we ensure that the Democratic Party continues to lead.”

(Have we forgotten Geraldine Ferraro — to say nothing of the women of the Green and Socialist Workers Parties — so soon?)

But after Clinton, EMILY’s List president Stephanie Schriock admits, there’s “kind of a gap” before the next Democratic women in line, New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar, and just-sworn-in Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren...

Y’all are right. The Dems’ vitality-challenged voting bloc is long overdue representation.

But I still go with Lee: stupid people are the largest Dem bloc and she has a near unique ability to showcase all their many facets.
Perhaps, just perhaps, even more than Obama.

Hilarious, seeing as the Dems don’t have a deep bench with national appeal. Who they gonna call - Barbara Boxer? Mikulski? Nancy Pelosi? Mmmmm, I don’t think so.

Now contrast to the GOP bench - Nikki Haley, Kelly Ayote, etc.

C'mon. You know Haley and Ayotte because we talk about them. We don't talk about Democrat backbenchers, who are about as old and experienced as Haley or Ayotte, and that's who'll probably run.

Yeah, seriously, who CAN the Democrats run?

Best choices are probably Janet Napolitano, Kathleen Sebelious, Mary Landrieu, Christine Gregoire, Patty Murray. I'm not suggesting that they have deep national appeal, but they won't get laughed off the stage at first thought.

I guess when Al Gore TV goes Al-Jazeera, Gregoire will have time on her hands.

Napolitano may run. She'd be reminiscent of some of the bad, futile candidates of years gone by, but she'll have her moment, as they did.

The name I've heard is Kirsten Gillibrand. It's sort of the Obama strategy. Find somebody who's gotten elected from a big state who doesn't have much experience or much of a record and hope that they don't make mistakes and can breeze in on a "historic first" campaign. She may well end up as the VP nominee. Blanche Lincoln might also be a possibility or Maria Cantwell.

I don't know much about any of these women. For all I know they are all awful (Democrats, after all), but my point is that we know mid-level or lower-level players on our own side, but don't have much knowledge of their counterparts on the other side (or at least I don't), so we think about Barbara Mikulski (who is still alive and in politics) or Geraldine Ferraro, or Bella Abzug, or Shirley Chisholm (who aren't), because we don't know who's actually out there and available today.

My mistake, Jennifer Granholm is the Current TV lady. She was born in Canada, and (under the old rules) ineligible for the presidency. See, I really don’t know these players.

But..but..we must not omit the Distinguished Gentleman from Georgia..Rep. Hank Johnson. He’s the dim bulb that was wringing his hands worrying about Guam tipping over...He deserves a place at the table..right next to the mashed potatoes.

I like this thread. Finally some sense.

Plus Republican Niki Haley and Republican Kelly Ayotte are conservative women and pretty too. We demand pics (there used to be rules on this site). who is hotter or more conservative?

Hey, why not Sandra Fluke? Since Obama has been screwing the whole country with his marxist, redistributionist policies, why not have a woman who also wants to screw the whole country and have the country pay for it?

Gee, Barack and Sandra, aka “BS”. Heads of the USSA (United Screwed States of America).

Closer than you think!
