Perry doubles down against ObamaCare's Medicaid expansion

Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) doubled down Monday in his opposition to expanding Medicaid under President Obama's healthcare law, even though opposing it could cost his state $90 billion.

At a press conference where he was flanked by other conservatives, Perry argued expanding the health insurance program for the poor would make Texas “hostage” to the federal government.

“It would benefit no one in our state to see their taxes skyrocket and our economy crushed as our budget crumbled under the weight of oppressive Medicaid costs,” Perry said at the state capitol.

States can choose whether or not to allow the federal expansion of Medicaid under the Supreme Court’s decision last year to uphold ObamaCare.....

I hope so, if Texas falls....(sounds so serious) we all fall.
Not sure why any conservative (self proclaimed) would cave.

How could it cost them 90 billion dollars? Is that over a 20-year period?

No one fights harder for states rights than Perry.

He will be demonized for this as not caring for the poor.

The poor? Try illegal aliens ...

This is the elephant in the room. How else would costs go up so dramatically? We’ve got millions of them streaming in, having kids, and their kids need more care, too.

I think we ought to take the whole damned nation and name it Texahoma since Texas and Oklahoma seem to be the only two states willing to stand up against the out of control fed under this tyrannical obozo hussein regime

I would make the point that there is no such thing as a free lunch especially when it comes to Medicaid expansion.

1. Where do the Federal Funds come from? Borrowed from China, or provided by the citizens of each state increased taxes. The Governors should be encouraging fiscal responsibility, not more spending in a system that is already unaffordable.

2. The Federal Funds are only for a limited time, leaving the states to figure out how to balance their budget deficit created by the withdrawal of Federal Funds.

3.It is a ridiculous waste of money to send dollars to the Federal Government where much of it goes to support Government Bureaucracy. It is more efficient to keep the money with in the state to begin with. (ie get back to the 10th amendment).

There was a Perry thread here the other day, and I actually saw a conservative repeat the disgusting leftwing slander that Perry is a queer.

Unbelievable.

Ditto. I lost whatever use I had for him.

A couple of points:

First, people that know me, know that I HATED the idea of Perry becoming president, due to numerous positions, starting with Illegals and Sex Vaccines for little girls. But I DEFINITELY support and respect him here. He’s taking a lot of heat, and he deserves the support of every one of us for doing what’s right.

Second, this is an EXPANSION of the Medicaid program - all he is doing is keeping the way it has been under the first 4+ years of Obama, and 8 years under Clinton, and 4 years under Carter. If Perry is “heartless” (to use his debate term here), then so were those Democrat Heroes.

It’s set up so that the Federal gov’t will pay a lot initially, then in a few years the State will be on the hook. Smart move for the future of Texas to refuse it as most of the politicians taking it must be thinking about their short term elections.
