McCain: ‘I don’t understand’ threats to block gun bill debate

Sen. John McCain said Sunday that he opposes the thought of filibustering a debate over gun legislation that will probably be brought to the Senate floor this week, despite threats of such action by fellow Republican senators.

“I don't understand it. The purpose of the United States Senate is to debate and to vote and to let the people know where we stand,” Arizona's McCain said on CBS’ “Face the Nation.”

A trio of first-term GOP senators–Rand Paul of Kentucky, Mike Lee of Utah and Ted Cruz of Texas–stated in a letter last month that they will block any gun control legislation that they consider a threat to Second Amendment rights.

Several other Republican senators joined in, and in an expanded letter to be sent Monday to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, they wrote that they would oppose a bill that "would infringe on the American people's constitutional right to bear arms, or on their ability to exercise this right without being subjected to government surveillance."(continued)

Juan is clearly not defending the US Constitution.

He needs to be prosecuted as a traitor.

And that, Senator McCain, is exactly why you’re still Senator McCain and not President McCain.

It would be better for him if he truly didn’t understand. My fear is that he does.

Senility, dementia or Alzheimer's?

Statist tyranny.

The guy never saw a liberal freedom-stealing proposition he didn't like. Scumbag. This is the kind of guy to whom conservatives sent their money trying to beat a commie, and he throws that election and uses their money to beat a more conservative Republican, running a race like it mattered if he won!

I'd call him filth, but even filth probably has standards, and I'd hate to insult it.

No wonder you lost to an unfit for the job, glorified community organizer.

You campaigned not to lose instead of campaigning to win.

If it weren’t for Palin, it would have been an epic landslide.

All those years in Washington and he doesn’t understand politics? The Dems do this when they are the minority.

Actively working for the other side.

During his Presidential run, when talking to the Press, he said “The Media is my base.”

He actually thought the MSM was on his side.

They threw him aside in a heartbeat for Obama.

I saw him last year, up close for over an hour. No dementia, seemed strong, active, alert and sharp.

I say McCain is brainwashed or broken by the North Vietnamese (now the whole of Vietnam). And what about that accident he started where about 169 American servicemen were killed? He wet started that plane, right?

No. McCain did not cause the accident. He saved a fellow pilot. This is just a nasty rumor that people are spreading around the net.

It is not true.

He is an SOB for all I am concerned, but he just happened to be in his plane preparing for a mission when a sidewinder launched off another plane from which it was being installed and readied for use. I know people who were on that ship and that is the story I get from them all.

He's a liar, and he knows it.

Didn't Harry Reid just change the opportunity to block taking up a bill for debate? Even if he hasn't, I've seen the Senate debate an issue for a week, where the debate was framed under a "motion to proceed to thing we are debating." In other words, the Senator can talk about the issue, no matter what.

But, if I recall correctly, a minority can no longer block a motion to proceed to something, but they can still block moving to the vote. In that case, the procedure is to extend debate, not to block it.

Yes, the Forrestal wasn't his fault. But his Naval career did consist mostly of crashing airplanes.

From Fact Check:

McCain did lose two Navy aircraft while piloting them. One crash was found to be be McCain's fault, the other due to an engine failure of undetermined cause.. A third was destroyed on the deck of the carrier USS Forrestal when a missile fired accidentally from another plane hit either the plane next to McCain's or, less likely, his own aircraft, triggering a disastrous fire that killed 134 sailors and nearly killed McCain. A fourth plane was lost when he was shot down over North Vietnam on a bombing mission over Hanoi.

A fifth alleged "crash" turns out to be a misinterpretation of a flight accident that did not result in the loss of the aircraft. McCain admitted to causing that incident through "daredevil clowning" but returned safely.

Of course, he also had the distinction of graduating eighth from the bottom of his class at the Naval Academy. I wouldn't expect someone that dumb and lazy to be a very good pilot. John McCain is a great illustration of the idea that nepotism is simply affirmative action for white people.
