NEWARK — It was a “kumbaya” moment for Newark Mayor Cory Booker and Gov. Chris Christie, but one that will have a lasting impression in Newark.
Despite being on opposing sides during Booker’s victorious U.S. Senate run against Republican Steve Lonegan, the two men once again touted their bipartisan alliance Thursday with the groundbreaking of the Springfield Avenue Marketplace, a $94 million retail and housing complex that includes a 66,000 square-foot ShopRite supermarket along one of Newark’s most troubled corridors.
“This is not because of a mayor. It really is because of great leadership on many different fronts,” Booker said, thanking Christie, Essex County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo, the City Council and project developer Tucker Development, the company that also built the downtown Courtyard Marriott.
Booker heaped thanks on the developer, Richard Tucker, but also credited his partnership with Christie for helping to usher in much of Newark’s economic development boom.
“It happened because I have a governor who put partisanship aside, stood by this city and delivered for us. We’re seeing it today,” Booker said...

I worked in a Shoprite in Newark back in 66 and it got held up by a Mutt and Jeff team....the Mutt was so nervous I was hoping he didn’t sneeze.

Jobs for the local people, property values go up, incentive for other businesses to open up because of increased traffic patterns, better housing, more tax revenue ...
