Oberweis Mounting Run for U.S. Senate
NBC NEWS ^ | Oct 23, 2013 | Caril Marin

Posted on 10/23/2013 7:51:55 PM PDT by chicagolady

State senator Jim Oberweis---who has run twice for U.S. Senate and once for governor---is going to make a run again for the Senate seat now held by Dick Durbin.

Obeweis said this morning, "Though a number of groups had encouraged me to run for the U.S. Senate against Dick Durbin, I had pretty much decided not to, believing it to be almost impossible to win. Then Ron Gidwitz contracted a poll. ... The results stunned me. I expected to trail Durbin about 60 percent to 30 percent. Instead it was 49 percent to 38 percent with me leading among younger voters and independents. After carefully considering that and not wanting to give Mr. Durbin another easy pass, I am strongly leaning towards running against him."

Oberweis, Republican and conservative, differs with Durbin on both social and fiscal issues. Durbin spoke in favor of same sex marriage at a rally in Springfield Tuesday. Today Oberweis, wearing a button saying "Marriage--One Mom, One Dad", will appear at a rally in the rotunda of the capitol against legalizing gay marriage.

A wealthy businessman for decades, Oberweis acknowledges that a race against the incumbent U.S. senator will not be easy:

"This is a huge and expensive undertaking," the state senator from Sugar Grove acknowledged. "It is still a long shot but Mr. Durbin has been in Washington for 31 years and has lost his Illinois roots."

God Bless Jim Oberweis, I have known him though the years and he has been a solid Conservative. He even helped oust the GOP Chairman, WHO NOW works for the ACLU!! The GOP chairman was a clown and needed to be ousted!!

Glad this race is heating up. Durbin may be entering the danger territory if this Obamacare collapse continues. Also, Durbin has been called a liar by the White House.

This is coming on the heels of Mike Ditka saying he ‘shouda’ ran against Obama in 04’. Come on people! It’s all wishful thinking. The heavyweights have to step up. Ain’t happening.

Was this chairman the guy who chose Keyes to run against Obama after Ryan dropped out, despite the fact that Oberweis placed 2nd in the GOP primary (after Ryan)?

Ditka would have beat Obama (then again, these were the Blago years).

It was wishful thinking to beat Coakley, but we did because of Obamacare. This law may cause a wave, just at a time when Dick Turban is becoming stale.

No, That Was Judy Barr Topinka, Gop Chairman who marches in the Gay Pride Parade

Illinois Review who pretends to be standing for Illinois Conservatives is Nixing Jim Oberwies and did not mention in their article that Jim Oberwies has stood against Gay marriage in Illinois against all odds even when it was the most unpopular thing to do.

Illinois Review Fran Eaton is a SNAKE IN THE GRASS and does not stand for Conservatives in Illinois and she is NO Journalist, she writes her own opionion and masquardes it as Conservative commentary!

I gotta part company with you, Miss P. Oberweis was a disaster and he all but handed a safe House seat (Hastert’s) to Democrat Bill Foster, and he destroyed a good man, Chris Lauzen, to do it. Lauzen would’ve easily beaten Foster. He’d also be 69 in 2015, and that’s too old to embark on a Senate career (not that he has a remote chance of beating Durbin).

You have warm feelings for him, but I read the accounts and talked to IL people about Oberweis, and we are in complete disagreement over the man. That he didn’t get out of the way after he blew that House special was the last straw. We need younger and more aggressive candidates, not old, perennial office-seekers.

Ugh! This flip flopping loser will NEVER win high office, he’s lucky to be a State Senator.

Funny how the man that compared pro-lifers to the Taliban is completely forgiven and now undeservedly beloved by certain fools and still pimped for higher office despite failing miserably in every attempt, smearing Chris Lauzen and getting his a$$ kicked by the rat Foster in his only general election appearance. This is a rich jerk who thinks he’s entitled to office and is willing to tell people whatever he thinks they want to hear, it’s remarkable how well that works. He takes a strong position against illegals and gets certain people to treat him like a damn folk hero despite the flip flopping, cronyism with RINOs like Hastert, and non existent ability to win.

Fieldmarshaldj, I agree with you about the 2008 congressional race. In Sept. 2007, I said, in freerepublic, “State Sen. Lauzen should be elected to Congress. After he wins, Oberweis should be appointed to Lauzen’s state senate seat.”

I think that Oberweis would be a great U.S. senator, but, since he started his current job nine months ago, I hope that he’ll keep that seat for at least four years. If Sen. Oberweis thinks that Sen. Mark Kirk is too liberal, Oberweis should run against Kirk, in the 2016 primary.

My eyes are rolling. Oberweis keeps running and keeps losing.

Oberweis also tried running for Will County GOP Chair and lost.

Back in 2008, Oberweis said that he would self-finance his campaign for the IL-14. This got Denny Hastert to endorse him. Obie did spend $3 million to trash Lauzen. But by the general election, Obie begged the NRCCC to fund him. Then Bill Foster beat him. Obie’s loss, gave the media lots of gloating about how Hastert’s seat fell to a Dem. That money the NRCCC could have been spent on the special election in the IN-07. I never forgave Obie for that loss. I don’t want him to run for anything higher than State Senate seat. Also, Oberweis Dairy’s ice cream sucks too.

I like his ice cream (haven’t had any in years). But I would have preferred he never run for any office again. I’m guessing his State Senate seat isn’t up next year or else he wouldn’t be risking it. What a douche, he finally wins something and he’s ready to try for that out of reach brass ring again. He’s far too important to stay a lowly State Senator you see, he looks in the mirror and sees PRESIDENT Oberweis!

I’m harsh, I know, but I see through this guy. But he takes the right issue positions (NOW) so let us praise him! And let us continue to smear Chris Lauzen on his behalf.

I’d vote for him over Turbin, or Kirk for that matter, that’s not saying much, I’d vote for Hitler over Turbin, at least he was honest.

But in this primary, not if I can help it. Does anyone have an opinion of Doug Truax?

I wonder why Gidwitz polled he Senate race, I guess Rauner (who he is working for) was considering the Senate before choosing Governor.
