The Democratic Party: How It Can Save Itself
The Atlantic ^ | December 5, 2013 | Ted Van Dyk

With the GOP in disarray and the president an increasingly lame duck, Democrats need to take the next three years to refind their focus.

Between 1968, when Lyndon Johnson left the White House, and the end of the century, the nation elected only two Democratic presidents. Both were Southern populists who had been careful to differentiate themselves from Great Society and their liberal predecessors. That all changed in 2008, when Barack Obama defeated the party-establishment candidate, Hillary Clinton, and then Republican John McCain with a campaign that pledged to end political and ideological polarization with pragmatic problem-solving—from a liberal point of departure.

Before 2008, Obama looked like a liberal of moderate temperament. He had the bad luck to take office at a time of financial and economic crises overshadowing everything else. He has said since that he underestimated at the time the depth of the crises. That no doubt led him, before growth and stability had been restored, to undertake in 2009 a remake of the entire health sector. Both his stimulus package and healthcare proposal were mainly designed by House Democratic leaders and the interest groups that supported his 2008 campaign. There was no serious attempt, in formulating either program, to draw Republicans into participation, as LBJ had done in 1965. Provisions allowing the sale of health-insurance products across state lines, and providing for meaningful tort reform, could have done that without forfeiting Democratic support. Trial lawyers would have objected but not jeopardized the bill's passage....

Any Save-the-Democrats strategy is gonna require throwing Barry under the bus, because he has clearly screwed things up to such an extreme degree that he has really alienated even their true-believers. So all the blame and all the anger needs to be pinned on his bony brown arse, and not the party or liberalism as a whole.

Of course that would make them all RAAAACISTS, so they probably won’t do it.

If they do I’d expect they next make an extreme turn towards Economic Populism a la Bill DeBlasio or the Fake Indian. It’s pure sophistry, but my sense is that the low-infos are ready to buy it.

How do we save promote oppression, greed, lust for power, deviant morality, racism and misogyny all rolled into one?

That is the question.

The Democratic Party: How It Can Save Itself

The current voters will tire of Obama and the leftist idiocy... so we'll just have to import a hundred million new voters for the Democrats.

THE ONLY WAY DEMOCRATS CAN SAVE THEMSELVES IS TO STOP BEING DEMOCRATS AND RINOS.

Whistling past the graveyard.

The author makes one excuse after another for the Democrats -- refusing to recognize that the Obama they elected was the anti-American dictatorial Communist tyrant that he is.

They sold him as "post-partisan and post-racial" when he was clearly anything but.

They fooled themselves. And they want to be forgiven without so much as uttering an apology.

It is altogether a rather odd call to action - presuming, as it does, the handy erasure of the past six years from the historical record.

Oh, on the contrary, to save themselves they just have to keep up the bluff and bluster and lies,

and count on the GOPe to not call them on it.

The gop/e are not the “people”. People are hurting and financial pain wakes people up.

How to save the party and Republic;

1. Impeach and remove all of Zero’s administration
2. Repeal the 16th and 17th amendments
3. Restore the government to the framers intent- limited
4. Eliminate all program and agencies not covered by The 18 enumerated Powers of Congress

Whenever the Republican party is in trouble, the advice from the press is always "Be more like Democrats".
So let's turn it around on the Dems and say "Be more like Republicans".

What do the Democrats need to be saved from. They’ve finally worn down the American people to not oppose all the things they do. It would probably be justified for them to double down and go way more extreme. They can’t lose. If they didn’t lose in 2012, they probably can’t lose.

Don't people see Obamacare is a win/win for Democrats? If it continues to be a disaster, that means they get single-payer, fully-socialized healthcare. So Obamacare is a greater success if it fails than if it succeeds for the Democrats.

No one is even proposing we go in a better direction.

That’s true. Saved from what? They have no opposition, and they are simply importing an electorate which is sympathetic to them.

The So-Called Republicans aren’t upset about spending or loss of rights or Big Government or any of that. They only care about getting contracts for their donors. Long as that keeps happening, and they can be Big Men in D.C., retire as lobbyists...then whatever. The Rats can impose socialism all they want.

The economy isn’t the only thing barry underestimated. The only way the democrat party can save itself is to HIDE IT, because the more it’s exposed the faster it goes down.

The whole article presumes that Democrats are capable of rational thought and developing balanced policies to govern the country better. Call Rod Serling! We’re back in the Twilight Zone.
