Sarah Palin’s Barbarism
The National Review's The Corner ^ | April 28, 2014 | Patrick Brennan, associate editor

Posted on 04/28/2014 1:20:49 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

It’s been no secret for a while that Sarah Palin, erstwhile vice-president candidate, is no longer a serious political contender — for evidence of that transition, note that even among her faithful, at CPAC this year, she got just 2 percent of the vote in the straw poll, tied with Condoleezza Rice. But as her crowd-pleasing performance in the very final speech of that event — and her lucrative contract with Fox News and huge social-media following — indicate, she’s gone from being a potential political leader to something of a cultural totem.

That means her speeches have gone from being standard political pablum to something even more substanceless — more or less a long string of hokey but often amusing jokes. But for all the lightheartedness, her appeal is to a set of people who take seriously their commitment to faith and freedom, right? Well, should this line garner laughs from such a crowd?

Oh, but you can’t offend [Islamic terrorists], can’t make them feel uncomfortable, not even a smidgen. Well, if I were in charge, they would know that waterboarding is how we baptize terrorists.

(VIDEO-AT-LINK)

As Rod Dreher explains, this is pretty perverse:

"Not only is this woman, putatively a Christian, praising torture, but she is comparing it to a holy sacrament of the Christian faith. It’s disgusting — but even more disgusting, those NRA members, many of whom are no doubt Christians, cheered wildly for her. . . . Palin and all those who cheered her sacrilegious jibe ought to be ashamed of themselves. For us Christians, baptism is the entry into new life. Palin invoked it to celebrate torture. Even if you don’t believe that waterboarding is torture, surely you agree that it should not be compared to baptism, and that such a comparison should be laughed at. What does it say about the character of a person that they could make that joking comparison, and that so many people would cheer for it. Nothing good — and nothing that does honor to the cause of Jesus Christ."

Torture — waterboarding being something reasonable people may consider to constitute it — is and should be a question of grave moral consequence for Christians, and is for any Catholic familiar with the Catechism. Palin wasn’t even just jokingly comparing a serious violation of human dignity into one of the most important transcendental recognitions of it – she was mounting an expansive defense of something near torture, on the grounds that our prisoners ”would obviously have information on plots,” and therefore ought to, apparently, be subjected to a horrible practice not as a morally necessary last resort but a habit of quotidian intimidation. There’s a word for that kind of practice: barbaric. The Greeks used to use it to describe the other guys.

It’s obviously a hit piece by a GOP establishment yessir type holding a tear wiping hanky for Boehners cheeks.

My daughter survived waterboarding in the military.

So it's not torture if you survive it?

Why not use it on criminal suspects in the US then?

All these slam-Palin articles all in the same short period of time. The Left and the GOPe sense that something is brewing. So do I.

Patrick, Palin is still allowing the likes of you to draw a paycheck writing substanceless drivel.

Palin's got nothing on Torquemada.

There are plenty of places for people into coddling and respecting the ‘rights’ of people trying to kill you.

Just sayin’

BUMP!

With a very few exceptions, this whole thread reads like what goes on in a girls middle school class.

I probably post more Palin threads than the next five or six people combined and I’ve been seeing these since the day after McCain lost.

We need to hire Jeff Foxworthy and have a FR game sho called “You might be a liberal”.

Picture it:

“If you spend years bitching about Palin’s hair/voice/clothes/house/tv show/traditionally right wing comments/book/kids/dog and then cry in every thread that America needs to find a conservative to lead it...you just might be a liberal!”

I think it could work

Americans have been rich and spoil too long that they are willing to abandon common sense in business and war. Only place they have common sense is in pro sports. Let me count the ways. Liberals feel affirmative action is necessary even if they do not select the best and brightest. Yet they will go ape if their black dominated home pro football team had to shed 60 percent of the team and replace it with smaller and less strong Asian/Hispanic/White players and lose every game afterwards. Conservatives feel free trade is necessary, but they would freak out if the coach of their pro football team open seminars for opposing coaches that will unveil their secret techniques for winning. Libertarians would advocate constitutional rights during war for enemy combatants, but would be the first screaming on top of their lungs “kill them” to exort their home team to victory. Americans know what is needed to win the Super Bowl, but when it comes to business advantage and winning wars, they put away their common sense.

1963 communist goals. Thats why. Liberals have implemented them perfectly. Check them out if you have not seen them yet.

Isn't barbarism a name coined for how crude and ruthless the Arabs of the Barbary Coast were? I wonder if the irony was lost on Patrick Brennan? His choice of word to call Sarah Palin is off the mark.

The wheat is rapidly being separated from the chaff.

The Republicans' long knives are out for America's Iron Lady. She has called out the GOP-e for the collabarators that they are, and they are in full panic mode. They've read the TEA leaves, knowing full well how she eviscerated the corrupt Republican establishment in her home state of Alaska, aware that she threatens to do the very same to the national GOP's "Corrupt Bastards Club."

The problem: the GOP has brought those "long knives" to a gunfight. Sarah is packin' heat, and she's a damned good shot.
