Sen. Ted Cruz is a decided underdog for the Republican presidential nomination, but he understands where his opening lies. And this, in turn, tells us a lot about the shape of the contest and the fight the GOP is about to have.
It is no accident that Cruz began his campaign at Liberty University founded by the late Rev. Jerry Falwell by asking evangelical conservatives to consolidate their support behind him. The most important sentence in his speech was this one: Today, roughly half of born-again Christians arent voting, Cruz said. Theyre staying home. Imagine instead millions of people of faith all across America coming out to the polls and voting our values.
Although Cruz has always been a religious conservative, the senator from Texas is much better known for his crusade against Obamacare and his willingness to shut down the federal government. His evangelical turn is his first play to create a base on the right end of the party to challenge Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker as the main alternative to Jeb Bush....

He has this disgruntled Methodist’s vote.
More proof that Dionne and everybody inside the D.C. bubble completely doesn't know what the Hell is really going on.
See, everything about politics is a fricking NCAA tournament with the Left.
"Will Cruz alienate the Tea Party? Will moderates warm up to him? Will he be willing to compromise with a skeptical Congress?"
None of Cruz's bold declarations and the fact that Republicans have lost 4 of the last 6 presidential elections because they ran feckless moderates is lost on Dionne. Nope, Cruz has to be "strategizing," there has to be some ulterior motive why Cruz is running.
Why is he an underdog? He’s one of...one candidates actually running.
Makes him the frontrunner to me.
The media is full of morons.
With a Cruz win, this disgruntled Texan could become gruntled.
Because that guy said so, of course.
I’ll be regruntled.
Mr. Dionne Jr., Ted Cruz is not going to read your article and get ideas from it.
I never gruntle in public.
Mr. Dionne Jr., do you really think there’s anyone left on this earth who hasn’t figured out the old spelling out a behavior and then saying “he’ll do it because he’s smart” tactic?
Didn’t Ted Cruz win 40% of the Hispanic vote as part of his Senate victory in Texas?
If he could achieve that on a national scale in a presidential race, that would be epic.
A Hatian immigrant twitter friend told me that she wants to hear Cruz stand in support of solid traditional families like Reagan did. I think we’ll be able to count on her vote.
He has this disgruntled Methodists vote.
I like both walker and cruz. I’d hate to see their battle for conservative votes so split conservatives that they give Bush an opening.
As did happen in 2008 and 2012.
Yeah I’ll keep my mouth shut about Walker and expend all my venom on Little Jebbie and Chunky C.
Youve been with the professors
And theyve all liked your looks
With great lawyers you have
Discussed lepers and crooks
Youve been through all of
F. Scott Fitzgeralds books
Youre very well read
Its well known
Because something is happening here
But you dont know what it is
Do you, Mister Jones?...
Well, you walk into the room
Like a camel and then you frown
You put your eyes in your pocket
And your nose on the ground
There ought to be a law
Against you comin around
You should be made
To wear earphones
Because something is happening here
But you dont know what it is
Do you, Mister Jones?
Walker has been a very effective governor. Translating that to the Presidency could be a problem for him. His persona comes off kind of like a Mr. Rogers. Not exactly the commanding prescence we would like to see in our Commander in Chief. In a room full of world leaders he would definitely seem awkward and out of place. Cruz has a much more confident, dignified, demeanor that conveys authority.
Just my take as I’ve studied the two.
Underdog? Really...? Only the left think he is an underdog...
He has this very disgruntled Methodist’s vote, as well. So that makes two of us.
