Ted Cruz: Are Democrats Behind Trump's Citizenship Questions?
Texas Tribune ^ | Jan. 12, 2016 | Patrick Svitek

HUDSON, N.H. — Ted Cruz on Tuesday went further than ever in needling Donald Trump, suggesting Democrats are behind the billionaire's questions about his citizenship.

Speaking with reporters after a rally here, the U.S. senator from Texas was asked what he thought of Trump citing Harvard law professor Laurence Tribe's analysis that Cruz might be ineligible to be president. Trump has pounced on Cruz's Canadian birth to cast doubt on whether he is a natural-born citizen.

“I will say it is more than a little strange to see Donald relying on as authoritative a liberal, left-wing, judicial activist Harvard law professor who is a huge Hillary supporter," Cruz replied. "It starts to make you think, ‘Gosh, why are some of Hillary’s strongest supporters backing Donald Trump?’"

Cruz then suggested Democrats were supporting Trump as a way of propping up a Republican they believe they can beat in the general election.

"You know, the last couple of elections, you’ll recall the Democrats got the nominee they wanted to run against in the general election," Cruz said. "It seems the Hillary folks are very eager to support Donald Trump and the attacks that are being tossed my direction.'"

The remarks represent Cruz's sharpest turn yet on Trump, whom he has refused to criticize for months, even as the billionaire has sharpened his attacks against Cruz. The two are now locked in a tight race in Iowa, the first-in-the-country caucus state.

Trump has been raising questions about whether Cruz is a natural-born citizen, which the Constitution requires for someone to serve as president. Cruz has insisted the legal question is straightforward: He argues his mother's U.S. citizenship (she's from Delaware) makes him a natural-born citizen, even if he was born in Calgary and his father is from Cuba.

Tribe, whom taught constitutional law to Cruz at Harvard, has said the issue is not as cut and dry, recently telling The Guardian that questions about Cruz's eligibility to be president are "murky and unsettled." Trump has favorably cited Tribe's analysis more than once, calling the professor a "constitutional expert, one of the best in the country," during a rally Monday in New Hampshire.

Tribe, viewed as one of the top liberal law professors in the country, has a long history of donating to Democratic candidates and causes. He did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Cruz is back in the Granite State for the first time in two months. He plans to hold another event later Tuesday afternoon, a town hall in Londonderry.

When the media reporter asked Trump about this, Trump said:

“I don't know, I just don't know, but if there is anything to it, Cruz better get out in front of it, because you know the Democrats will”....he was telling Cruz to get it off the table and Cruz came back with a picture of ‘Fonzy on a board jumping the shark’ well, now look where Cruz is at...

It's not up to anyone else but Cruz to take care of this, Peloski said she doesn't know, McConnell said he doesn't care...there are a lot of people that would really like to know about this, this is after all our Constitution at stake, and because the Supreme Court was so fired up to have a ‘black president’ they didn't deal the Constitution a good deal, they put their own opinions on it instead of what our Fore Fathers said and why they said it and now we have a big mess on our hands....

It's not Trump, it's not the other candidates, it's between the Supreme Court and Cruz to solve this...

Not only for right now in this mess, but for the future of our Government, we need the honest answer on this situation...and Mark Levin and Rush Limbaugh is not the Supreme Court nor is anyone else...

What is it with Cruz supporters on this website who-- technically not posting the same link over and over again-- post the same story, anyway, over and over again, as if there isn't 3 other threads all discussing the same thing.

I've noticed that too. It seems strange to me that they'd want to keep the whole NBC thing front and center. It's like an obsession.

If Trump Does think it’s an issue, as the only candidate in the race “concerned” about it, he should take it to court.

They’re under the mistaken impression that it makes Trump look bad, but they don’t know any better.

Post your article that contains the interview with GOP Texan a year ago here. That will confirm the actual source of this conflict

Trump is the only one raising the issue who has standing. Why doesn’t he take it to court?

This might matter to some Iowa “Caucus” goers.

FWIW, the point has been made, and it’s doubtful that Trump will even mention it again after today.

Why should Trump take it to court...it’s not about him, his birther is just fine, it’s Cruz’s birther that is in question....

Trump gave him a heads up on this, Cruz didn’t listen...well now he’s got himself in a mess, are the libs going to let it go? NO, they didn’t with Barry Goldwater, John McCain and they are not going to with Cruz....

Urge your candidate to get ahead of this or he’s going to lose more than this race...he’ll be coming up for re-election as Senator and I’m sure after all this mess, they will be asking the same questions....

Funny thing about that, three fourths of the people on FR spend more time talking about how horrible the Republicans are than about the Democrat trash who they expect to be horrible.

Far from being "out of the closet", Trump is just saying what everyone knows, that the Republicans are as bad as the Democrats these days.

As a candidate, he is one of the few people impacted and as such is the only person who can take the issue to court. He’s the one insisting it needs to be settled in a court. Cruz can’t sue himself and federal courts cannot issue advisory opinions. There has to be an actual case filed.

If Cruz was half the lawyer his cheering section claims he is he'd have taken care of this a year ago if not long before that.

Turns out all the super lawyer stuff is just smoke and mirrors, more marketing than reality.

For the smartest man in the room, attacking the messenger instead of the message seems kind of foolish in this instance.

And he is ALSO being attacked because he is a conservative, Just like many Freepers attacked and benched every conservative in 12 until they got the liberal they wanted to begin with.

All this is, is a replay of 12.
