Blue-state lawmakers want to keep Trump off 2020 ballot unless he releases tax returns

Lawmakers in several deep-blue states want to require presidential candidates to release their tax returns in order to appear on the ballot in those states, a sharp rebuke of President-elect Donald Trump's ongoing refusal to make his tax records public.

A pair of Maryland Democrats on Tuesday announced they would introduce a bill mandating the release of five years of tax returns, mirroring similar proposals in New York, Massachusetts, California and Maine.

If approved, the proposals could keep Trump from appearing on some ballots in 2020 if he continues breaking with the decades-long tradition of financial transparency and decides to seek a second term.

U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) in May introduced a federal bill requiring major-party candidates to release their returns, but that legislation didn't advance in the Republican-controlled Congress....

Sure!

Tax Returns
College Transcripts
Birth Certificates
Pay to Play Payments
Swept under the rug criminal activities
Proctoscopy and Paternity test results

Hey, go for it!

Oh, BTW, all MSM and Political personages calling for any of the above need to release their own records at the same time.

The left just keeps doubling down on the stupid, don’t they? I knew the left was going to go nuts when Trump won. I just didn’t think their implosion would be this bad. Keep it going lefties. This is pure entertainment watching their crackup gone viral.

I agree. They really, truly, do not like our system of government.

Wouldn’t it be more important to require monthly drug tests of the president and all members of congress?

Trump won Maine’s Second Congressional District, which covers 80% of the State of Maine.

Maine splits it’s electoral votes by congressional district.
Nebraska is the only other state that does so.

Trump received one Electoral Vote from Maine.

I can’t see this going anywhere in Maine; the state Senate is Republican-controlled, and our Governor, Paul LePage, is the most conservative governor in America.

It wouldn’t pass constitutional muster anyway. States cannot add to the requirements of the office of president..............

In order to be placed on the ballot, candidates must demonstrate a cartwheel, recite pi to 30 places, and swim 200 yards.

Hardly. Nobody has a right to have electors pledged to them.

Article II Section 1:
Each State shall appoint, in such Manner as the Legislature thereof may direct, a Number of Electors, equal to the whole Number of Senators and Representatives to which the State may be entitled in the Congress: but no Senator or Representative, or Person holding an Office of Trust or Profit under the United States, shall be appointed an Elector.
The long and the short of the matter is that Electors are more like senators than anything else - and the Seventeenth Amendment does not touch the selection of Electors.

The Electoral College is the mechanism whereby the states elect the POTUS.

The Electors don’t have to be elected by a popular vote; it’s just traditional. The presidential election would be thrown into the House of Representatives automatically if three blocs of states enacted laws disqualifying each others’ selections. That doesn’t happen, but logically it is an admissible constitutional possibility.

How about “Hillary can’t run unless she releases a list of the top 100 donors to the family foundation, and indicates how many of them visited her office while she was Secretary of State”?

Assuming she lives until 2020.

So the Red States should counter by excluding any Dem candidate from going on the ballot.

Why not? California effectively did this to keep Republicans off of ballots

LOL. I know that the entire Washington Post is a giant liberal editorial page, but this is blatant editorializing even for them. I don't remember them getting worked up about Clinton violating a "decades long tradition of transparency" when she didn't release her full medical records.

“In 2020, he’ll have four years of tax returns while as President.”

There may be four years of tax returns but none of them will be released

If he's not taking any salary, will he have any income to report?
