Martin O’Malley: Bernie Sanders Wouldn’t Have Beaten Donald Trump
The Huffington Post ^ | April 10, 2017 | Jennifer Bendery

Even if Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) had won last year’s Democratic presidential primary, he wouldn’t have defeated Donald Trump in the general election, says former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley (D).

“I don’t believe so,” O’Malley speculated Friday on DC/BS, a political podcast hosted by Jon Allen and Peter Ogburn.

O’Malley was one of Sanders’ presidential primary challengers, and he didn’t get very far. His campaign fizzled out after the Iowa caucuses. The Huffington Post was there for his final event, when he stood on a chair in a cramped campaign office in Des Moines and urged the 100 or so people there for free pizza to help push his candidacy over the top.

If he had persevered and gone on to win the primary, O’Malley thinks he would have had a better shot at beating Trump for the presidency than Sanders or, if he had run, former Vice President Joe Biden.

“I think I would have won,” he said....

Yeah, if Bernie won, a great deal of women with cats would have sat out the election.

Probably not. But it could have been a three candidate race. NeverTrumpers who voted for Hillary wouldn't have gone for Bernie. Somebody more prominent than David French or Evan McMullin would have gotten into the race. Whoever won might not have gotten more than 40% of the vote or so.

But if Sanders had been nominated, it might have been because he scooped up alienated White voters who otherwise went for Trump. Maybe that would have denied Trump the GOP nomination and Sanders would have run against Rubio or Cruz. That race would have been hard to call.

Lots of voters are not aware Sanders was tutored in Marxism by U. of Chicago professor Herbert Marcuse and Marxist muckraker Saul Alinsky while he matriculated at U. of Chicago in the 60’s.

Sanders says “I am from the working class,” but never had a job until he was elected Burlington Vermont Mayor in 1981 when he was 38. Before that he mostly collected welfare.

He wouldn’t even take a job for the sake of his young son. Taking a real job or getting any dirt under his collectivist nails would be beneath a great Marxist thinker like Bernie.

Millions were lifted up from poverty during the Reagan boom years. Sanders would rather they had stayed poor to confirm his notions about the evil “millionaires and billionaires.”

Bernie Sanders would have been trounced in the 2016 had he been the nominee. Not every state has been overrun by trust-funded left-wingers and sophomoric out-of-state idealists the way Vermont has. He might have reached 200 EC votes since so much of the east and west coast populace is collecting the dole. He would not have taken several of the states Hillary took.

I agree Trump would have beat Bernie.

However, this scenario is a fun meme to push when I’m on HuffPO or DU. It absolutely drives lib/progs nuts hearing “the Bern would be prez today, if...” meme from a conservative.

The meme also pushes, without ever having to say it, that the DNC is dirty and crooked and working against their (far left) agenda.

This was the most interesting election in my memory. No wonder it is and will be discussed for a long time.

Let them continue to over think the election. Wastes more of their time.

That is uncommonly perceptive.

Bernie’s base, in any event, was just simply not nearly big enough to beat out “Make America Great Again”.

Bernie, bless his heart, is not really committed to the American Spirit. He believes in “equality” and The Donald put his faith in “merit”.

Merit won this time.
