Barak Says With Arafat Alive, there will be no Peace
19:50 Oct 13, '03 / 17 Tishrei 5764
(IsraelNN.com) Former Prime Minister (Labor) Ehud Barak told Channel 2 TV News earlier today that as long as Yasser Arafat is alive and in charge, there will never be a peace agreement worth the paper it is signed on.
Barak added that while he disagrees with many key governmental policies, there is no justification for former cabinet ministers and members of Knesset to engage in behind-the-scene negotiations and the signing of any documents. He stated emphatically that the actions of Yossi Beilin and his followers are unacceptable, as well as harmful to the state. Barak stated with absolute certainty that no other country would tolerate such actions, adding he was particularly surprised at the lack of judgment exhibited by former IDF chief Amnon Lipkin-Shachak and former IDF general Amram Mitzna.
Barak added that if private citizens, even notables, wish to engage in talks with PA activists, may do so, adding this is one of the privileges of a democratic society but such actions are unacceptable by elected and former elected officials.
