Hong Kong - A 78-year-old woman in northern China has eaten an estimated 10 tons of soil over the past 70 years, a news report said on Monday.
Hao Fenglan, from Zhangwu county, Liaoning province, developed a taste for mud and dirt at the age of eight and says she feels physical discomfort if she does not eat a meal of dirt at least once every day.
The diet has done her little apparent harm and she is in good health, according to the South China Morning Post. - Sapa-DP

Just damn.If you want on the new list, FReepmail me. This IS a high-volume PING list...
[As i mentioned, the B/C & JD! lists are going to float into and out of whack over the forseeable future, while I try to cobble a rig back together for myself. My apologies for any incovenience or misunderstandings in this time frame. New signups/removals may be flaky in this time-frame as well; please bear with me, and keep in mind you may have to FReepmail me more than once for me to get it done. Thanks again!]

There's a long tradition of eating dirt in a number of societies including that of the Sea Islands off Georgia.
Even stranger, it seems to be a largely female thing.

I've heard of this before. Seem to recall a connection to combating mineral deficiencies.

The wife of the man who was my granddad's farm foreman ate clay.
I grew up playing with her kids here on the farm and there was a certain area by the river where she would get it.

Someone needs to listen to Paul Harvey and remember to take her Citrical and Metamucil and give up the dirt.
Ah, Hell. Who am I fooling...dirt would have been a delicacy compared to my ex-wife's cooking. Ethiopians ate better than I did when I was married to her.

I remember reading of it several years ago, can't remember the source. And as someone noted, it was mostly women doing it.

My brother tried to trick me into eating a mud sandwich once. He managed to get me to take a bite. I never fell for that 'chocolate sandwich' thing again!

Eatin dirt one meal a day ? Big deal. Because of the famine, the people of North KCorea have been eating dirt for over ten years (let's not talk about why the food exported to NKorea never make it to the people)

she feels physical discomfort if she does not eat a meal of dirt at least once every day. I understand that. What about mental discomfort?
