So often it seems that self-righteous people like yourself, end up being the biggest hypocrites of all when a problem strikes them. All of a sudden the rules go out the window.

It seems I am guilty of stating that an actively addicted person is to some degree morally incapacitated.

XJarHead said: Plenty of soldiers got addicted to morphine due to battlefield injuries, and subsequently remained addicted even after the pain left. I had and have a lot more sympathy for them than I do for those who treated drugs as a toy from the outset.

Quite right. And do any of those soldiers who remained addicted steal to feed their habit? The sad fact is yes, they do.

The hope for addicts is recovery. If the addict is not recovering, it won't matter where our sympathies lie, because he will be at high risk for worse and worse consequences.

You are more guilty of a lack of understanding of some very real differences in the broad topic of drugs.

Many addicts are "legally" addcited and receiving Rx from their doctors. They must continually take "legal" drugs to make life liveable. Are such persons "morally incapacitated"?

I'd like to see you announce your convoluted judgment to the family of a suffering cancer patient.

If you cannot see a difference between the medically addicted person, whether the drugs are supplied through prescription or not, and the person who began by seeking a high of some kind, you have an unrealistic view of life and human nature.

No matter what, you do come across as a holier-than-thou and my red flags fly high when people like you show up.

Next question, who was supposed to play Mrs. Norman Schwarzkopf in his Gulf War Movie?

Bigger question - who did Rush cast as the "Baby Milk Factory"?

If proven guilty, I will humbly resign my Free Republic alias.

Judging had nothing to do with my post, though I am not against judging per se. The idea of never judging anyone is a goofy idea of lefties like Franken.

I am trying to look forward with clear eyes. Regardless of the reasons for Rush becoming addicted, we'd better be realistic about what goes on with addicted persons. If we get hung up on the differences between Rush and a street drug addict, we could set ourselves up for a fall when certain ugly details come out.

I'll shut up now.

Oh please with all the gobbledygook. Of course there is nothing wrong with judging/discerning and you should know what was meant here.

This is much more a case of "There, but for the grace of God.........."

Pointing fingers and shaking them at someone is often an exercise by people who can't face their own flaws.

Never say never, Nut, because you don't know where life might take you and you sure haven't walked in Rush's shoes.

I am not saying that Rush hasn't made a huge mistake in his life. But since I believe it likely evolved from something that began innocently, I refuse to start making moral assessments.

I think you have gotten carried away with this "setting ourselves up for a fall" and "ugly details" nonsense.

Good grief, he is not some kind of drugged out crazy guy. He has a dependency and he is going to do his best to rid himself of it.

Maybe you could drop the frenzy attitude and pray for his strength. While you're at it, get real about the difference between a functioning, productive user of pain meds versus the party addict who can barely get hinself/herself showered and fed.

If you put both types in the same category, you choose to see things in an extreme way that probably differs from the majority of people.

Thank you for the advice.

Morganna, the kissing bandit. I haven't checked the thread to see if anyone else has posted it yet, but thanks, you just caused me to waste two days trying to remember.

<g> Gulf War Won - starring Morganna, the Kissing Bandit as the Baby Milk Factory:

That was an inspired bit of casting. I'd love to have a .wav file of Rush reading the credits for his "movie".

Has everyone read the story in Newsweek about Rush? I'll post it here, but if anyone thinks it deserves it's own thread...go ahead. I thought it was an interesting human look at Rush.
