Five Questions for Rush to Face
Newsday ^ | Ellis Henican

Posted on 10/15/2003 7:28:44 AM PDT by twittle

Did the drugs wreck his hearing?

...Was the addiction so strong that he kept taking this drug even at the risk of deafness? Yikes!

How come no one noticed?

I've spoken to several friends of Rush's. They say they didn't have a clue. He was alert. He was focused...

...Maybe the experience of such a high-profile druggie will change the way that all addicts are perceived.

Why did his two attempts at treatment fail?

How did he get the drugs?

...In his flurry of revelations on the radio Friday, Rush was notably vague on this point.

Will his own experience soften his staunch support of harsh drug laws?

Normally the nancy boy Ellis annoys me to no end, but I think his questions are very valid.

Why don't we wait for Rush to complete his program and then let him answer these questions himself?

I think that's the point - if he will answer them.

I have no problem believing that. One of my best friends growing up was addicted to phenobarbital. He had to take it to prevent seizures, in gradually increasing doses. He excelled in music, academics, tennis, and basketball. Last I knew, he was music director at a big high school. Probably the most lucid, focused, hyper-motivated person I've ever known.

To the best of my knowledge Rush doesn't owe answers to anybody but for two people: Marta and himself.

It would be a mistake for Rush to play out his soul searching in the public arena. It opens him up to further liability, it will look staged, and his critics aren't going to be satisfied anyhow. He does need to answer such questions to himself and family.

As far as Rush going to jail - I hope not. I doubt that the type of reform Rush needs can be obtained in jail. Am I questioning our approach to punishment for drug users? Yes.

I am not aware that search warrants have ever been served on his home, so it seems unlikely that he's ever been caught in possession. The audio tape was made without a search warrent, so it will never be heard in court. Rush's political enemies have probably inflicted as much damage as they can for now.

In the years to come, Limbaugh's audience and public at large will never know for certain if Rush is clean. We can only take it on faith. It will always be that way from now on. People will come and go from Rush's audience based on the specter of his drug problem.

I would agree with you if Rush's position had always been something like: "You live your life and I'll live mine and as long as we don't bother each other, what we do is nobody's business but ours."

That hasn't been his position. Also, he has promised to fully disclose everything. I say hold him to that promise.

I agree with you. Unlike a politician, Rush is a private citizen who makes his living expressing his opinion in a public venue. He doesn't owe anyone an answer to any of Hennican's questions.

In my opinion Rush's biggest problem is the law. If he comes back in 30 days and is the same old Rush then his fans will be with him. That is unless something else surfaces. If he should face criminal charges then all bets are off. Remember there is a hugh and powerful section of our society, including the democratic party and the liberal elite, that would like to destroy and completely silence him. Probably Rush has done more than any other one person to put the GOP where it is today. As a result, to his enemies me must be destroyed. I am hoping Rush comes back as strong as ever. He is in my prayers.

I asked this question on another thread and got no answer. Is there some special Florida law that excludes illegally obtained evidence, even when the authorities were not involved in the illegality?

Well, he never did rehab for drug abuse. All he did was those 24-hour detox procedures and get back on the air the next Monday. He may have been momentarily without the opiates in his system, but he did not take the time to lessen the number of opiate receptors in his body, which takes longer, nor did he examine himself in therapy or figure out with the help of experts how to replace his previously bad habits with new, good ones. That's why those failed. He probably did those star-detox quickies to keep his addiction secret.

And should Rush go to jail? H@ll no. He would be of more value paying his debt to society (if indeed he committed a crime) through community service with that wonderful voice of his. His honesty and the ease at which he recounts and explains would make him perfect for writing or speaking to all of us on avoiding the horrible situation he got himself into.

Was Rush's public performance so over the edge, or not enough cutting edge that whether or not he is taking pain medication is a real concern to his listeners. He always delt with facts and his analasis thereof, which was pretty much right on. Only the highly self righteous moralists will give a dam what Rush is doing if his commentary stays as clever as it has always been.

Don't look for Rush to grovel, explain and ask us to feel his pain. This is his private life and he will keep it that way. No criminal charges will be prosecuted against him. If that were in the cards it would have been in the works. After all, Rush wasn't sell drugs, just taking prescription drugs.

The 4th amendment only protects you from illegal govenment searches. Your neighbor can always break into your house, see something illegal, and tell the police - thus giving them the probably cause they need for a warrant. In this case, unless the maid was working with the police before she made her tapes (and therefore a quasi-government official) they will not be excluded as they were not obtained in violation of any of Rush's rights.
