A Lebanese has been the victim of a scam orchestrated by a Syrian and a Nigerian who made him believe they could multiply his $50,000 four times after they hypnotized him, judicial sources said Wednesday.
The victim, identified by the sources only as Jihad, woke up to discover his pocket emptied. He rushed to the Judicial Palace to file a complaint, according to which Internal Security Forces personnel arrested the Syrian national but were unable to locate the Nigerian. Investigations showed that the Syrian, identified as Jamal, was a professional conman.
He had been previously arrested along with his Nigerian partner, Issa, while operating in the United Arab Emirates.
The pair had apparently entered Lebanon following their expulsion from the UAE.
To the bad luck of Jihad, he met Jamal who befriended him and told him that he had a spiritual friend who was able to increase his fortunes without any efforts or risk.
Jihad carried his $50,000 and headed with Jamal to an apartment in Sofar, Aley, where Issa was waiting for them.
The victim recalled that Issa took his money bag, covered it with a sheet, read some verses from Koran, lit incense and murmured some vague words.
Jihad was hypnotized, according to the statement he made, and woke up a few hours later to find himself alone in the apartment and robbed of his wealth.
Mount Lebanon Chief Investigating Magistrate Joseph Qazzi placed Jamal in custody and issued an arrest warrant against Issa.

there is apparently a very small but real % of any population that will fall for the nigerian-style scams, every time.
