6. Scale back unnecessary regulation including the tort system. Institute a cap on punitive damages, limits on class action suits, and limits on liability to the actual percentage of liability with no plaintiff able to collect if said plaintiff was involved in the commission of a felony at the time of the alleged tort or was more than 49% negligent in the alleged tort. Note that the loser in a frivolous lawsuit shall pay the attorney fees of the winner. There are many other regulatory structures that also need to be included that need to be included such as repealing the Family leave mandate, getting rid of OSHA etc. I thought this was pretty clear that I think a whole ##### load of regulations need to be repealed but I was trying not to be scatalogical. further this in not an end plan merely a begining. I will be coming up with a follow up plan.

Her old job: $19,760/year. Waiting tables (which she says isn't equivalent income): $12,500 base and $10K tips (very conservatively speaking) = $22,500.
Here we have $2.13/hr * 40 * 52 = 4430/ yr. and as to the $10K / yr in tips that also may not be there as tips vary according to locality and type of resturant.
Sounds like her real problem is basic math skills.
Sounds like you are being unnecessarily hostile when it is clear that the Clinton economic policies which GWB left in place have harmed a number of your fellow Americans. My apologies if I inferred from this you were stating she was being laxy. Clearly there was unjustified complaining about her. i would point out that a $19,500 / yr job with benefits would probably take a $27,000/yr job to equalize without benefits depending upon the exact value of the benefits of course.
Now your criticsm could be valid and true but it still would be very much impolitic for a conservative republican due to the fact that historically the Republican Party has been associated with being teh Party of Big Buysiness (rightly or wrongly does not matter it is a perception). If a Republcan criticizes a little guy who is working and going to school then that is harmful to other Republicans because it hepls perpetuate the sterotype democrats love to run against.

Exactly the point. The bulk of entry level jobs, from bricklayer to trucking are being handed to illegals as "jobs americans wont do". The result of this is that the young people trying to get a foothold in say the construction trades or data input are shut out, no start to upward mobility for them. Skilled machinists, fabricators, accountants, IT professionals are put out in favor of mexico, china, ussr cheap labor. This is the middle class from bottom to top. Aside from higher taxes to support displaced workers, without a strong middle-class just who the hell do the manufacturers think will be left to buy their goods and services? They (collectively) are successfully diminishing their largest buying segment and the result will be that with diminished sales of product they will have to cut production and lay off even more workers. This is not about free trade, but fair trade. These outsourcing countries have all kinds of rules, regulations and laws in place to ensure that they can undercut U.S. workers and they all have restraints on imports of U.S. products as well as their companies outsourcing to American firms.

My "Florida tip experience" is limited and not what I was referring to anyway. I was referring to
2000 waitstaff average earnings from the BLS. (Remember, that figure is from period entering recession.) Others here have argued their experience and antecdotal evidence.
To: anniegetyourgun
Interesting. That primarily confirms the $2.13 wage minimum. And since part time work is pandemic in this field, you can't project 40 hours per week onto a hypothetical average.

Why not. The subject of the article was working full-time and I make an assumption that she would also want to find full-time work (even if that meant two 20/hr week jobs.)
My argument is not about what everyone else here seems to want to argue (heartlessness, the unemployed, immigration, government stats, or other such side issues). My argument is with the subect's statement that she cannot replace her less than $20K/year job with one in the food service industry. My argument is that such is not the case. Obviously, she didn't want to do that kind of work and is taking some nursing courses instead to retrain into that field. Probably a good idea. Having said that, waiting tables is not a $2.13/hour job, it can be done full-time, and it is honest work.

Scale back unnecessary regulationI was just trying to make the point that more than just "unnecessary" regulations need to be repealed. So many of these burdens are well intentioned, and deemed necessary. I was using a more forceful term not to be scatalogical, but to make the point that a more thorough shakeout was needed.
