Semantics. I might have said that humans are adapted to conditions in which food is realtively scarce. But I may care too much about precision, and journalists definitely don't care enough.

I would have said that too, but I would add one more word:
"... humans are adapted to survive conditions in which food is realtively scarce.

This would make it clear that scarcity isn't necessarily our optimal circumstance. We also have brains, so that when food is abundant, we can survive with far less effort, thus freeing us up to do other things ... like chatting on the internet.
