People, the ONLY reason someone goes to hospice is to die. It's the law. Unless Jeb Bush, who holds Terri's life in his hands, per his EO, has decided that Terri's stay has ended, MS is breaking the law. Why has he not been arrested?

I have never heard of a condition called "vegetative" state. In any event, no one should have the right to murder another human being, "vegetative" or not. We are keeping an organism alive only at this time. Not at all. Given your line of faulty reasoning, we should disconnect all those who are getting feeding intravenously. Is that what you think is "humane"?

Just because one has not heard of a term (such as vegetative state) does not mean the condition does not exist. Can you name all the organisms in the ocean? Do they not exist because you have not heard about them?

Some people on feeding tubes have requested death rather than lying in bed countless years, but the law forbids that. If you had ALS(Lou Gehrig's Disease) and you were facing spending your final year of life with your mental capacities in tact, but your body jello, would you want that? Is death a worse alternative? Is living with God a worse alternative?

My husband, a psychiatrist, who is standing right next to me says you are wrong.

This one was deleted, and I don't blame management. But typing the entire definition of NGFBHINO was the most satisfying thing I could think to do to that no good....

You have stated it, but you do not understand.

Oh please, please, help us "understand"!

How long have you been a lawyer for Michael Shiavo? Or are you Michael "satan" Shiavo himself ?

Sure. Six days without food is not particularly life-threatening in itself. The dehydration, if that was total, is far more serious, but can quickly be repaired with IVs. As long as no vital organs shut down, she would be a little worse for wear, but probably not in any real danger any longer.

Six days without food, yes. But six days without food AND water?

Wasn't there talk about Terri's kidneys being damaged?

Well I pray that, if it has to be, they will hang themselves with their own actions. Such as trying to re-starve Terri and being arrested for it.

He is a monster. Bumping her around in her condition right now could kill her - but I am sure he's hoping that. This man is DESPERATE to kill Terri - his actions alone are screaming his guilt of something.

Thank you. You said in reason what I could not say in anger. I endorse your statement 100%, especially the quote.

What I fail to understand is why some safeguard wasn't built into the Bill that would have prevented something like this in the first place.

Given your line of faulty reasoning, we should disconnect all those who are getting feeding intravenously.

Exactly. My grandmother had to be fed like this for months and months and we were urged to stop feeding her by "experts" at the hospital. With rehab, she regained her swallow and went on to much more fruitful life.

How many of us have no trouble coming up with dozens of instances where the "experts" failed miserably?

I'd think her doc says she's gonna die, therefore to the hospice with her. Now if by some minor miracle she continues to live in the hospice, that's another matter.

What I despise most is the pseudo-moralistic underpinnings of the movement. Disgusting.

On the contrary, home hospice allowed my terminally ill father and brother to die in their own beds, with their families by their sides, not hooked up to fruitless IVs in a sterile hospital.

You judge an entire, worthwhile process by one abuse, and that's not fair.

I could be wrong, but I believe that she is to receive medical care and have the tube replaced

This was all done in less then 24 hours?

Maybe I am over reacting .. But I'm sorry .. the stunts done by her husband are just unbelievable

You have obviously never seen a person in a vegetative state AKA PVS. They have no brain EKG function whatsoever, yet they appear wide awake and semi-functional.

well, I have seen "vegetative state"...

Those with "brain death" have a flat EEG (EKG is heart rhythm, not brain). Those on sedative medication might also have a flat EEG

People with PVS have some brain function.

The problem is that at least 30 percent of people "diagnosed" with "PVS" are not PVS

People with PVS do not respond to visual stimulation and smile, although they do respond to deep pain. THey "wake" but their eyes don't focus. They rarely can eat. They just sit there.

Terri obviously knows her parents and smiles.

The problem is that many physicians despise brain damaged people.

I've had expeience withneurologists" who say people have PVS, or "near PVS" and advise us to kill these people--even when I, as a physician, know they are NOT PVS, because they don't meet the criteria or because they are lethargic from their seizure medications.

One of my patients had frontal lobe syndrome, with excessive emotions, and we had a neurologist see he to see if her crying was from seizures and if it could be treated. Instead of helping, he spent almost an hour trying to talk her relatives into taking out her feeding tube...insisting her life was useless. However, the patient and her family were native Americans, and told him off. Later, the niece told me: That's the difference between you white people and we Indians. We respect our elders...

Did you ever see the film where a bunch of mentally retarded people were caught in the crossfire in the Lebanon civil war? For three days they were neglected, since anyone moving nearby was shot at. Then MOther Teresa announced: Tomorrow, me and my sisters will go and rescue them. Even though warned, she persisted...and saved 60 of these people...

"If the order to rehydrate and give food had been given for my daughter, I'd have camped out at her bedside until she was back in shape"

Pretty hard to do when they are denied access to her and there is an armed security guard to see to it.
