A Christian warrior under fire (Pat Buchanan gives Gen. Boykin cover fire)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A Christian warrior under fire

by Pat Buchanan Lt. Gen. William G. "Jerry" Boykin, the former Delta Force commander, seems to be exactly the kind of warrior America needs to lead us in battle against the kind of fanatics we face.

The general is an evangelical Christian, and from his deep Christian beliefs he derives his convictions about the character of the war we are in and his courage to fight it. But these beliefs may yet cost this splendid soldier his post at the Pentagon, where he has been put in charge of the U.S. campaign to run down, capture or kill Osama bin Laden and Saddam Hussein

At Christian gatherings, Boykin has declared from pulpits that our enemy is "Satan," that God himself made George Bush president, that America is a "Christian nation," that this is why our enemies hate and attack us.

During these rallies of the faithful, he brings Christians to their feet with a story from his tour in Mogadishu. Boykin was on the hunt for a Somali warlord named Osman Ato. Here is how he describes his capture of the arrogant warlord and their personal confrontation:

"[Osman Ato] went on CNN and he laughed at us, and he said: 'They'll never get me because Allah will protect me. Allah will protect me.' Well, you know what, I knew that my God was bigger than his. I knew that my God was a real God, and his was an idol."

When Ato was captured, three days later, Boykin went into his cell and told him to his face, "You underestimated our God."

Admittedly, not an ecumenical moment. But what is clear from this Mogadishu confrontation is that Jerry Boykin believes Christianity is the true faith, that Jesus is God and that God is guiding America in this war against Satan.

To a devout Christian, there is not only nothing wrong with the general's beliefs, everything is right about them. For just as Muslims do not accept Jesus as God, Christians do not accept Muhammad. Martyrs, whether to Christianity or Islam, do not die to testify that all faiths are equal.

Which brings us to the president's predicament. He does not want the war on terror to become or to be seen as a religious war. He is being pressed by foreign leaders to renounce Boykin. He is being pressured by the press to fire the general for insulting Islam and declaring America a Christian nation.

Yet, as commander in chief, President Bush cannot want to abandon a soldier's soldier like Jerry Boykin for having declared convictions that are probably not too far from the president's own.

In Asia, President Bush put some distance between himself and the general. He told the press, after a meeting with Asian leaders who brought up Boykin's remarks: "I said, 'He didn't reflect my opinion. Look, it just doesn't reflect what the government thinks.' And I think they were pleased to hear that."

Well, some Americans were not pleased to hear that. For these words suggest Bush may be about to throw a Christian warrior to the wolves to appease Asian "allies" who do not have all that many troops in the field fighting alongside us.

Let us go back to what the general said. He said that America is a "Christian nation." So what? If Israelis can call Israel a Jewish nation, and we call Iran and Saudi Arabia Islamic nations and Poland and Ireland Catholic nations, what is wrong with Boykin calling ours "a Christian nation." Secularists can call America a secular nation. Are American Christians alone to remain mute?

As for Osama, he may not be Satan, but he does a pretty good imitation. And anyone who has read his declaration of war against us knows that Osama sees this as a religious war against "the Crusaders" – i.e., the people of the Christian cross who are to be expelled from the Islamic world. Boykin takes Osama at his word.

And if he believes this is a war against Satan, is that all that different from Bush saying that we fight an "axis of evil"? Is it all that different from FDR singing "Onward Christian Soldiers" with Churchill while writing the Atlantic Charter and plotting anti-Nazi strategy at Placentia Bay?

As for Boykin's remark that Allah is an "idol," it was made in a battle a dozen years ago about a Somali warlord who mocked the general's country and proclaimed the superiority of his God. And the general has publicly declared that this war is not a war against Islam.

The commander in chief should stand by this soldier. If he cashiers him, he will damage the morale of the military and Christian community, whose hero the general is and who are among his most loyal followers. What would be gained? The people who want the general demoted and humiliated are not the president's friends.

I for one believe this country is founded on Judeo Christian heritage. I also believe we should all support the General by emailing the news outlets.

Fact: Chrisianity is a religion of peace.
Fact: Islam is a religion of killing off the ifidels.
Bush & his political correctness is abominable. He can't stand up to/for his God. He can't stand up to/for his party about judges. He can't stand up to our national defence by securing the borders. So if you are a true conservative, Christian loving/fearing individual who wants less government & fiscal restraint & a president to stand up to the NEA, NPR, one who will take on Jessie highJackson & the Klintoons, this guy is not your man. What do you think Ronnie Reagan who have said & done about these issues?

Its not so much what the General said...which is a case by itself...its the fact he wore his uniform to the 'event' and thats a strict no-no for any member of the US military. This guy knew that too. He was more or less making a bold statement, and doing so as a 'general'. The amount of flak for him would be half as much...if he had simply shown up at the church conference...in civilian clothing...and made a few comments like this. Alot of miltary folks do take exception to his use of the uniform in this case. If we showed up at a Bush political rally in uniform....it'd be a problem too.

The General is not alone, e-mail the White house and lend your support to this American who has served his country so well.

Subject: Article in Tampa Paper

Will we still be the Country of choice and still be America if we continue to make the changes forced on us by the people from other countries that came to live in America because it is the Country of Choice???????? Think about it........
All I have to say is, when will they do something about MY RIGHTS? I celebrate Christmas, but because it isn't celebrated by everyone, we can no longer say Merry Christmas. Now it has to be Season's Greetings. It's not Christmas vacation, it's Winter Break. Isn't it amazing how this winter break ALWAYS occurs over the Christmas holiday?? We've gone so far the other way, bent over backwards to not offend anyone, that I am now being offended. But it seems that no one has a problem with that. This says it all!

After hearing that the state of Florida changed its opinion and let a Muslim woman have her picture on her driver's license with her face covered this is an editorial written by an American citizen, published in a Tampa newspaper. He did quite a job, didn't he? Read on, please!

IMMIGRANTS, NOT AMERICANS, MUST ADAPT. I am tired of this nation worrying about whether we are offending some individual or their culture. Since the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, we have experienced a surge in patriotism by the majority of Americans. However, the dust from the attacks had barely settled when the "politically correct" crowd began complaining about the possibility that our patriotism was offending others.

I am not against immigration, nor do I hold a grudge against anyone who is seeking a better life by coming to America. Our population is almost entirely made up of descendants of immigrants. However, there are a few things that those who have recently come to our country, and apparently some born here, need to understand. This idea of America being a multicultural community has served only to dilute our sovereignty and our national identity. As Americans, we have our own culture, our own society, our own language and our own lifestyle. This culture has been developed over centuries of struggles, trials, and victories by millions of men and women who have sought freedom. We speak ENGLISH, not Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or any other language. Therefore, if you wish to become part of our society, learn the language!

"In God We Trust" is our national motto. This is not some Christian, right wing, political slogan. We adopted this motto because Christian men and women, on Christian principles, founded this nation, and this is clearly documented. It is certainly appropriate to display it on the walls of our schools. If God offends you, then I suggest you consider another part of the world as your new home, because God is part of our culture. If Stars and Stripes offend you, or you don't like Uncle Sam, then you should seriously consider a move to another part of this planet. We are happy with our culture and have no desire to change, and we really don't care how you did things where you came from. This is OUR COUNTRY, our land, and our lifestyle. Our First Amendment gives every! citizen the right to express his opinion and we will allow you every opportunity to do so. But once you are done complaining, whining, and griping about our flag, our pledge, our national motto, or our way of life, I highly encourage you take advantage of one other great American freedom, THE RIGHT TO LEAVE.

If you agree -- pass this along; if you don't agree -- delete it!

AMEN

I figure if we all keep passing this to our friends (and enemies) it will also, sooner or later get back to the complainers, lets all try, please

what is wrong with Boykin calling ours "a Christian nation." ?

Because unlike Israel, the Muslim countries, or for that matter the UK, there has never been an official religion of the USA. Founded by men who were Christians, yes.

I'm not so sure. Algore came within one Monarch (SCOTUS justice) of winning.

I think 9/11 did more, and even that could wear off by Election Day '04, without another attack.

You guys are all missing the point. It doesn't matter whether the General was right or not. What matters is that he was making these statements to civilians while in uniform. It's wrong, and I'll bet that in retrospect, he admits it was wrong. Politics, because though it had a religious component, it was also a political statement, is not something officers are supposed to free lance in uniform.

To take another view, suppose he had been a Jew and made similar statements, in uniform, about how the Jews were the chosen people, etc. Or he could even have been a moslem himself, and been making statements in uniform at various mosques regarding the supremacy of Allah. Would that be perfectly okay? Or is it okay for our officers to do that only if they're speaking out in favor of Christianity?

Bad judgment on his part. Personally, I wouldn't want to see him fired over it because he's a hell of a combat leader. He should get a reprimand, and the White House should say that he was picked for general because he's a fighter, and those skills remain. He's now been reminded that its not his role to make such public statements while in uniform, and that whatever the controversy was now is over.

Point well taken, I agree.

The POS has made it very clear he does not wish to make this a war about Islam. It is irrelevant whether the General agrees or not; his job is to carry out the Commander-In-Chiefs directives.

Whether Bush is waging this war the right way is up to the electorate to decide at the ballot box.

I for one don't necessarily agree with his constant PC comments with regard to Islam. However, common sense dictates why he is traveling this road; he needs to bring the fight to the enemy and not be weighed down defending his choice of words.

Common sense also dictates that the General should not be relieved of his duties due to one statement. Unfortunately, common sense alludes the left most of the time. To the left, they believe these statements can be used as political fodder to weaken the POS. Once again, they are wrong.

Bush should not relieve Boykin of his duties. Let the left scream. For the louder they scream, the more hopelessly out of touch with reality they look to the public in general.

All a person has to do is SAY he is a.....(whatever)......and he IS that which he claims?

AND....all others who use that name to designate themselves MUST have the same derivative convictions?

THESE IDEAS SEEM TO BE IHHERENT IN THE POSTINGS HERE.
DOES THAT MAKE THEM TRUE?

...you say:

IS THIS A "CHRISTIAN" SENTIMENT.......
......ONE THAT DEFINES "CHRISTIANITY?"......

There are some deep parameters here that perhaps need to be clarified.
