Don is suspended over Israeli slur

An Oxford University professor who sent an email stating that he would not teach a foreign student who had served with the Israeli army was suspended from his post yesterday.
Andrew Wilkie, the Nuffield professor of pathology, has been told to stay away from his academic duties for two months and will receive no pay for the duration of his suspension.
In his email to Amit Duvshani, a 26-year-old student at Tel Aviv University, the professor said: "I am sure that you are perfectly nice at a personal level but no way would I take on somebody who had served in the Israeli army."
An Oxford University spokesman said: "Suspension is the most serious penalty that the university can impose, short of dismissal or removal from office."
He said that Prof Wilkie would be required to undergo additional equal opportunities training before being allowed to resume his duties.
"Prof Wilkie fully accepts the gravity of the situation and is determined to made the full use of training to ensure that his actions and those of his staff reflect best practice in future."
The spokesman added: "This ruling reflects that there can be no place for any form of discrimination within the University of Oxford other than on the grounds of merit."
Prof Wilkie, the statement continued, "wishes to make it clear that he greatly values the diverse backgrounds of the staff and students with whom he works and looks forward to applications from able candidates, whatever their background".
When news of the email became public, there was outrage from many of Prof Wilkie's colleagues. The academic admitted later that he had been "totally out of order". He said he had not intended to offend the pupil.
I don't think this guy has the common sense to be a professor, but then today that doesn't seem to be a prerequisite.
