I'm from Texas and have never been to southern California so I have a question. Is the burning area mostly grass or wooded? I've always pictured it as mostly grass.

The news coverage is pretty sparse. I guess if Koby Bryant or Scott Peterson were the fire starters they would be all over it. grrrrr.

At SGV Tribune there are several photo galleries (excellent journalistic work) of the fires.

There's a variety of different fuels for the fire.

In the area where the Grand Prix fire burned, the vast majority of fire fuel was scrub brush - white sage, chapparal, cactus, yucca.

In the area of the Old Waterman fire (Crestline), it's pine and oak trees, grasses, scrub brush.

In the San Diego area, it's black sage, paciwi, oak trees, wild grasses.

In the Simi Valley area, it's a mix of all of the above, plus some odd coastal plants and some cedar.

Is the burning area mostly grass or wooded?

It's mostly dry shrub like semi arid desert plants.

Latest from http://www.rimoftheworld.net</b

Latest Updates:

Monday 10:24 PM: San Bernardino County Sherrif Department has just issued a press release with a composite sketch of the suspect in the Old Fire. If anyone has access to this sketch, please let us know. I am unable to get in touch with the Media Relations Department and I don't want to bother the overloaded dispatchers.

Monday 10:13 PM: FIRE HAS JUMPED HIGHWAY 18 NEAR RIMFOREST ACCORDING TO VIDEO SHOWN ON KCAL 9. FIRE TRUCKS WERE SEEN PULLING OUT OF RIMFOREST. IT IS NOT KNOW IF OTHER FIRE TRUCKS HAVE TAKEN DEFENSIVE POSITIONS IN RIMFOREST. [THIS IS ONLY A SINGLE POINT-OF-REFERENCE REPORT. WE DO NOT KNOW WHAT IS HAPPENING IN RIMFOREST.]

Wow. That sounds just like west Texas, except for the pines. When the pines catch fire it's really bad. I'll say an extra prayer for you guys tonight. Stay safe.
